“Hotel Alphorn”
Reviewed March 25, 2012

Stayed at the Alphorn Hotel with my daughter who took up skiing for the first time. Location is excellent!!! - right next to the ski lift and ski school meeting place - main reason for choosing this hotel and not in the village. Let me make this quick and easy;
-Hotel itself is terrific with a nice restaurant downstairs - food very tasty and reasonably priced comparing to the prices in the village.
-Location excellent, if you came to Gstaad to ski otherwise you would be better off in the village, which is 10 minutes walk from the hotel and where the action is (don't expect to much of it though, Gstaad is kind off quiet). My daughter took up skiing for the first time so for us hotel location was perfect!!! I myself wasn't skiing this year - to busy exploring local cigar lounges and sampling on different local and not local beverages :)
-If you are a smoker, cigarets, cigars, pipes or whatever then hotel has a nice and cozy smoking room downstairs where you can enjoy your favorite beverage or a meal if you don't mind the smoke, that's the only place where you are allowed to smoke in the entire hotel.
-Internet? no problem, works great in every room - I need it for work so checked it beforehand.
-Staff extremely friendly so are the owners.
-Ski rental - very conveniently located downstairs - very fast and efficient!
-Taxi to 'downtown' Gstaad - around 10-11 Sf
-Bus/ski bus stop next to the hotel - but then again it's only 10 minutes walk to the village center.
- Great shopping possibilities in the village but pricy but that's why we came to Gstaad in the first place to spend some money, right? Otherwise plenty of good and cheap skiing in Italy or Austria.
-Many celebrities live in Gstaad so be ready to shake some hands or snap photos - I saw few but then again who cares, right?
Over all great vacation, it was my second time in Gstaad, first was back in late 70's so I can't remember much but I'm pretty sure we'll be back in Gstaad next year since my daughter loved it and me 2! Cheers!!!

The hotel is a 10-15 minute walk from the station in G'staad. It is on the outskirts of the town, but there is a ski lift and ski-runs right to the side of the hotel. There isn't much else in the immediate vicinity, but its only a short walk back into the village. The staff are excellent, the food and cleanliness well up to standard to be expected in Switzerland. The rooms are simple but comfortable, particularly my bathroom was small, but OK for a short stay. There is a lot of wood in the building and I had thought this would make a lot of noise, but at night I was not at all disturbed. While I was there it seemed to be used by locals, that is families from Switzerland, which I think is always a good sign. bThere seemed to be plenty of car parking room and the stop for the local bus is very close, but as it is only four stops into G'staad, I always walked, as it was quicker. Lift just big enough for 2-3 people, or 1 plus large suitcase.

Alphorn is very conveniently located - next door to the ski lifts and a ski school. And the hotel has a ski rental shop attached. We had small kids who we wanted to initiate into skiing so it was very simple - everything was in one place. This saved us a lot of time.

We had a brilliant view of the slopes and mountains from our room so that was great. The room was well appointed - nothing extravagant but clean, efficient and functional - as is normal in Switzerland.

Breakfast was not great, but adequate. Dinner was excellent.

We were there for Summer with our 2 kids, my parents and my wife. Though Gstaad is like a ghost-town in summer, we had great walks in the country side, great views of the Alps and we found (after searching for other options in Gstaad) that the restaurant in the hotel was super! The waitresses there were really pleasant and charming and we loved it! They even gave the kids colour pencils and paper to draw, etc! I would recommend this hotel highly.

We had booked through the hotel direct for a room for three, which was to have a fold-up bed, but on arrival we were allocated a double and a single next door to each other - this was perfect and much better than we had expected. The rooms themselves were lovely - spotlessly clean and with plenty of space. Both rooms had balconies with a wonderful view, too. The beds were very comfortable - as would be expected in Switzerland. The furniture in the rooms was matching and the furnishings and décor were of a very high standard.
We had booked the Half-Board option and the dinners were of excellent quality. The restaurant is quite small but very cosy and ambient. One of the main courses during our stay was Fondue, which was a really nice touch to have on a set menu. There is an extensive wine list with many excellent Swiss wines to try. The breakfast buffet has plenty of choice and is constantly replenished. The selection of cheeses and breads is wonderful!
There is a nice bar which always seemed to be busy with locals and residents alike and the prices for beer were reasonable.
Although the hotel is located out of the centre of the village, it makes for a nice walk into Gstaad and offers a quieter setting. It is right next to the ski school and is near several lifts.
This hotel is a fantastic choice and was the perfect venue for our family break over the Christmas period.

Hotel standards in Switzerland are high in general. This one is no exception.
We went for a week ski holiday and this hotel offered a very good package deal with ski pass. It is at the piste so literally you can walk 20 steps to the ski lift after breakfast.

Clean, nice chalet, good restaurant, friendly helpful staff. Bed was comfy.
Would go back there for sure.
