This is an absolutely must-do hike if you happen to visit the berner oberland region. You may need to allot half day to full day depending on how far you want to hike here. Getting to Schynige Platte itself takes about 55mins from Wilderswil- so if you are on a fleeting visit to this region, you may not find time for this one. However, if you plan to be in the BO for 4 days or so then definitely do this hike on one of the sunny days. You will need to buy a ticket from Wilderswil to Schynige Platte even if you have a Swiss Pass (about 60 SF round trip), so in that sense it is expensive. But the views are totally worth it!!! On your way to Schynige Platte sit on the right side of the cogwheel train for some great views of lake brienz and lake thun as you ascend. During the initial ascend the views appear on the left side(in the direction of the train moving), but after a while, you get spectacular views on the right side.
Once you are at the top you have soo many hiking options. You can do the full day hike that takes you from Schnige Platte to First (a solid 6 hr hike and the last train back from First is at 4:30 in the afternoon so you need to start early if you want to do this one). There are 2 other loop hikes which are equally enjoyable and with GREAT VIEWS of mountains on one side and the lake on the other! One loop goes to Duabe and loops back (1:30 hr). The other goes to Panoramaweg(3hr). Initially, the path is a bit steep. But after you reach Daube it is an easy descend. This hike is a must do for its spectacular views! My husband and I enjoyed it thoroughly and we highly recommend it

Best part was the scenery seen from the train. The Alpine garden was different but in September was past it's best as lacking in colour. Would probably best in June or July

BEAUTIFUL! We started our 6 day hike in the Jungfrau region from Schynige Platte. The ride up on the cog railway from Wilderswil was great. Once up in the mountains the views are breathtaking. We spent the night at the one and only hotel - a bit pricey but well worth it. Service, friendly and food delicious. Our room was spotless and comfortable. We were greeted with a big smile at breakfast, enjoyed our meal and set off for our first day of hiking to First. If you cant stay the night but can do this as a day trip - you will not be disappointed. Enjoy!

If you want to see the Swiss Alps, this is the place to go. With this day trip you will also enjoy a beautiful sight over the lakes of Thun and Brienz and the village of Interlaken.
Take the train from station Interlaken East (rail 2A) to Wilderswil (4 min) leaving every half an hour (CHF 2.20 pP). In Wilderswil you will take another very nostalgic small train (see picture) which will take you up to Schnynige Platte (a beautiful 50 min drive, CHF 60.- pP, but it's worth it!). By the way: Schynige Platte means "sunny plane", so if you're lucky, you will get the best view ever.
They will hand you out a map of Schynige Platte at the train station. When arriving on the top, the best walk is to take is n° 3 (orange, see map): this is rather easy, no special fitness required but good trekking shoes are important! Children can also do the trek (no buggies), and you can do it in 2:00 - 2.30 hours. Do not forget to take a bottle of water along!
Take enough time to take a good look to the alps around you, especially to the "Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau", some of Switzerland's most important and internationally reknown peaks (also mentioned in the map).
Another nice trek is the Botanical Alpine Garden way with over 600 labeled species. See map for more detailed information, flowers from June to September. Worth a detour, can be done in half an hour or up to 2,5 hours (depending on your interest in flowers).
Enjoy!

Schynige Platte is good for three reasons: 1) Mountain and valley views on the way up and at the summit. 2) An Alpine Garden with labelled plants. 3) The very old cogwheel railway.
We went up on a slightly misty day but it cleared quickly so we could take in the views of the Jungfrau region and down to the lakes near Interlaken. We spent some time walking, (or rather climbing,) around the Alpine Garden which is super for any interested in Alpines. We followed this by looking at an excellent and very informative video of the garden. Tip: look at the video before going into the garden - we wish we had done this, but had missed the notice at first. The railway is slow but a lovely ride. We had done it some fifty years ago and the engines and coaches seem unchanged. The railway celebrates 100 years old in October 2012. The 'locomotives' look like a garden shed on wheels except that my shed does not have an electric rod pantograph on the roof! Fascinating though to see the locomotives in action effortlessly pushing two well-laden coaches up the mountain. The station is at Wilderswill with easy connections on the Bernese Oberland Railway. Fares are expensive (as all Swiss mountain railways seem to be), but rail passes help considerably. Plenty of walking opportunites from the train - or walk up or down anyway
