This is a unique experience in elevation and Swiss engineering. To reach the Jungfrau destination known as the Sphinx, you must take a train from either Lauterbrunnen or Wengen, then change trains at Klein Scheidegg. After Klein, the train passes through a long tunnel where you will not have vistas. When you arrive, follow the tour signs that take you through indoor exhibits and outdoor viewing areas. This is an expensive trip, but I recommend taking the earliest train if weather looks good. You will have more photo opportunities and less crowds at the top. Expect to walk on fairly level surfaces and they have elevators to change floors. It is very cold and windy, so wear protective clothing, sunscreen, sunglasses. If you take the earliest trains, you must begin your return by noon, which should allow plenty of time at the top.

We rode the train to Wengen and then gondola to Mannlichen and hiked to Kleine Scheidegg, main train station on way to Jungfrau. The mountains were socked in with clouds so the hike was in the fog, but that added ambience, even if limited views. With half fare card and not going all the way to the top, was a good day.

A trip to the Top of Europe (highest rail station in Europe) was one of the highlights of our vacation. It was quite expensive but you can get a discount if you have a Eurail pass or a city card (given to you by your hotel). The trip takes 2 1/2 hours each way but you are rewarded with snow and some great views at the top. It is best to go on a clear day. We checked the local TV station that broadcasts live cameras at the top so you can see the conditions before you make the trek. Included in the ticket is a "tour" to two lookouts, a short panorama movie, a walk through an ice palace as well as a some small "museum" type area that tells about the making of the railway. There is also a small sledding hill and zip line (for an extra cost) although we didn't do those since we grew up in a snowy place so the snow wasn't a novelty. There is food for purchase or you can bring your own.

We stayed in Lucerne...so it took us very long to reach the top. It is a beautiful mountain but very crowded. The Indian restaurant serves good food.
