Owner description: The most spectacular way to cross the Alps: the Bernina Express from Chur / Davos / St. Moritz - Valposchiavo - Tirano links up regions with different languages and cultures. This is not a rack railway and the train winds its way gently through splendid scenery. On the highest railway across the Alps, the Bernina Express climbs up to the glistening glaciers before descending to the palms of Italy far below. This rail link between Northern and Southern Europe builds bridges between regions with different languages and cultures. The railway is unique, blending ideally with the alpine landscapes around the Albula and Bernina Passes. The train negotiates the 55 tunnels, 196 bridges and inclines of up to 70 per mille with ease. At the highest point on the RhB, 2,253 metres above sea level, you will find the Ospizio Bernina. Here, visitors can delight in the cultural and natural surroundings and enjoy the Alps at their most impressive.

We took the train from the oldest village in Switzerland, Chur, to Tirano. The scenery is amazing, right from the start, as it climbs to over 2000 metres on the four hour journey. The train departs Chur once a day in the summer and twice in the winter. Even at the height of summer there is plenty of snow, particularly the glaciers, and the waterfalls are a delight. The right side of the train (departing Chur) is the best to sit on for the views and have your camera ready at all times. Tickets can be booked at Chur station - make your seat reservation first and then get the train ticket. All seats are reserved. We took along a mini-picnic for the trip but there's a drinks/snacks cart that patrols the train.

I am writing based on the unique experience of seven member family - 2 grandparents, 2 parents, and three daughters (ages 15, 13, and 8). It is simply a train trip like none other in the world. We decided to do both the Glacier Express and Bernina Express ROUTES in one day. I emphasize "ROUTES" because we avoided the actual Glacier Express and Bernina Express trains and took the regional trains the locals use that cover the same exact routes. We did this for several reasons - 1) saved us money - about $140; 2) reservations on the actual named trains make the trains busier, and it is much more formal (not as kid friendly); 3) the windows open on the regional trains, which means no glare on the pictures, and a fresh cool breeze at all times; 4) we could get off wherever we wanted, whenever we wanted; 5) we literally bounced from seat to seat all day, depending on where the view was - we had one car to ourselves for about 2 hours of the Bernina route. We started the day in Hospental since we'd heard that the best views started in Andermatt, and there was a cheap hostel in Hospental about 300 meters from the train station. We took the train all the way to Chur, which was a great place to grab a bite to eat. From Chur we backtracked about 15 minutes to Richenau-Tamins. We then proceeded through Thusis, Filisur, Preda, Samedan, Pontresina, Poschiavo, and ending in Tirano. The trip was one big crescendo of scenery, finally peaking at the high point of Ospizio Bernina, with amazing views. The descent from there to Tirano is also incredible - a true feat of engineering. The weather was extraordinary the whole day, and the trip exceeded our already high expectations by a wide margin. All tickets can be purchased online at www.sbb.ch very easily - just make sure you add all the correct "via" locations I listed above to do the Glacier Express and Bernina Express routes. One other tip if you are traveling with kids: buy the Junior Card at the train station after you have purchased the adult tickets. They cost $30 per child, and the third child is free. These passes last a year, and mean that your kid travels for free anywhere SBB goes. Therefore, my family of five travelled for $200 (well, CHF).
I could not be happier with the experience!

Can not be described as seen indeed! Very good experience .. the scenery is fantastic and the Alpine houses is fascinating. Be very well prepared to take quick photos at any time (set shutter speed at hi value). Actually, my wife and me enjoyed very much. The staff is extremely professional and informative..thank you "Sonia"..the very skilled guide !

After Having travelled in Wilhelm tell express, glacier express and bernina express in switzerland . I found Bernina Express the best of all three. Nice hospitality. Great locations and very comfortable. The bus ride from Tirano to lugano and then train from Lugano to Chur was excellent.

We went on a pre-arranged tour from Milan with Zavvi, very good guide.
What’s not to see, amazing scenery and views.
Luckily for us clear day, if overcast probably not very good, difficult if on a pre-arranged tour though.
We went to St. Moritz, take a fat wallet.
