Traditional and excellent service. Centric location, nice decorated rooms and first floor restaurant. Great panoramic view from the top floor restaurant. Good cuisine. Personnel is helpful, friendly and professional, the hotel is cozy and has a beautiful guardian dog.

The Roter Turm is in a pretty, historical building in the center of the historical city of Solothurm. The interior is decorated with many historical artifacts and furniture.

Reception was very friendly, dinner service very fast with decent food and the Internet service fast and affordable.

On the other hand, the rooms and bathrooms are basic and the breakfast selection poor.

The hotel is centrally located in the heart of Solothurn. Unfortunately there is no parking and the hotel does not provide any directions on their website where the next garage is (google it, 'Baseltor' is only a 5 minute walk).

You have to like the collection of odds and ends antiques throughout the hotel, it provides a certain dusty charm, but the ticking of numerous clocks very close to your ear in the dining room can be a bit too much.

The room I stayed in was 'IKEA-chic, combined with 50s-retro-style'. The bathroom was tiny, but recently renovated and overall ok. Except for the showerhead, which had the size of a golfball. It takes forever to get the shampoo out of your hair. The closet was inadequate for a double-room.

At a rate of 180 CHF for a double-room, I would also expect the WiFi to be free of charge.

An absolute 'no go' is the fact that we had to climb over a very large black dog, positioned right in front of the reception desk. I can see people with a dog hair allergy, or people who are afraid of dogs, freaking out. The beast even started to sniff around in my handbag which I placed on a chair.

Another very disappointing experience was the attitude of the owner and his wife. I thought that one of the first things you learn in hotel school is: the guest is always right, he pays the bills after all. Not here, the guest is made to feel as if he is an unwelcomed nuisance.

My reservation was screwed-up due to an obvious mistake, or rather negligence on the part of the hotel owner to adminster the websites on Booking.com and HRS. Both websites lead you to believe that there are smoking rooms available. When I reserved one and even a separate eMail to the hotel did not result in any negative response, I believed that my wish was being honored.

The quite arrogant response ' information on the booking.com website is not our responsibility' and 'everybody knows, that the Law does not allow for smoking rooms anywhere in Switzerland' was simply not true. Booking.com says in their general terms and conditions that the hotel owner has access to the website and is responsible for the information provided.

No apology, no 'we're sorry for the inconvenience', nothing.

I'm glad I've experienced better Swiss hospitality during my travels in Switzerland, this hotel owner's attitude certainly leaves a very bad taste.

The hotel is located in the city centre - the central location is the main advantage. The rooms are basic and the decor dated, the bathroom is nothing special either. It is clean and serves the purpose, but nothing more.
Neither the rooms, nor the food or drinks are cheap. I would expect a more personal touch or the staff going the extra mile. I ordered a glass of water on the terrace for which I paid CHF 4.00. No ice cube, no slice of lemon....it could just as well have been tap water.
There are other options in Solothurn that are cheaper and probably better.

We have been staying two nights at the hotel during the weekend. Probably because of the film festival, the room was CHF 240 a night, not too expensive for Swiss standards but being quite used to hotels, too expensive for this one though. it might be because it was an overcrowded time, but we had reserved for 2 and the hotel booked a single room (I believe this can always happen in spite of a good service) and we finally got a room just next to the service room on the 3rd floor. In spite of a nice welcome and an indeed very nice breakfast, we were disappointed by a truly tasteless decoration and a very small bathroom offering absolutely no intimacy. We were disturbed by the strong smell of cigarette smoke coming from next door (we were in a non smoking room and the smell was strong) and most of all of the noise. Again, we weren't luck probably but we could hear very well the chairs and tables being displaced (probably from the restaurant). The noise was so disturbing that we had to bang against the wall at 2 in the morning.... Apart from that the bed was very comfortable and the view charming.
