Spent two night at the Hotel Amaris on business
The hotel was spotlessly clean , the room was comfortable and had a huge bathroom
All staff were friendly and helpful
Right next to the mainline railway station and 5 minutes walk from the old town make it an ideal base to explore the area. Zurich and Luzanne less then an hour by train

The hotel is about 75m from the underpass to enter the station. It is an excellent location if you have a swiss pass or eurailpass to travel quickly into Zurich, Basle or Berne with about 3 trains an hour to each. The front rooms in the hotel overlook the station and rail tracks. The room we had at the back was very large, modern and clean. The showers are fantastic. There is a room safe. There was free wifi which was easy to use but a little slow. A good breakfast is included. The manager was very helpful and quick to sort out any problems. There was no refrigerator or mini-bar - the hotel has a bar downstairs. There is a Migros mini mart at the station entrance that is open long hours (for Switzerland) where you can also get drinks and snacks. I would certainly stay there again.

Its a very nice business property, well organized and with hospitable staff, the best part is its location pretty close to Olten Station & has very good rooms, nice restaurants too, overall nice place for business travellers

Room Tip: Usually go for rooms on the rear side of property to avoid train noise in night

This hotel is literally a stone's throw from Olten train station. You can watch the busy station in action whilst having breakfast and also from some of the rooms on the front of the hotel. Clean and functional my room on the 3rd floor was rather sparsely furnished. I had a good nights sleep as the double glazing kept out most of the train noise. Breakfast was good with a generous variety of things to eat and drink. Expensive by general European standards (like all hotels in Switzerland) I did expect more comfort in the room. Reception staff when I arrived at 9 pm were not that welcoming providing a very basic welcome. Here's your key, lets have the money - your room is through that door. Not a very professional welcome. However despite my misgivings it was an OK hotel that I would probably use again.

I was attending a trade exhibition in Switzerland and wanting to be close by the station for easy access, chose the Amaris. My train left on platform 11 and it was about a two minute walk from the hotel to the platform.

The room was terrific, with a good shower room and it overlooked the railway station. With the windows closed there was very little train noise into the room and the airconditioning unit worked well. The deb was comfortable, though European pillows rarely offer me the support I would like.

Breakfast was excellent, with a good choice of meats, cereals and cheeses. A real plus is that bread and croissants are cooked in the restaurant and is therefore lovely and fresh.

Room Tip: If you don't want to see trains take a room at the rear of the hotel.

Strange but true: this hotel that practically sits on a railway track is soothing, calming and very easy on the eye. In my first fifteen minutes of looking around, it struck me that it would not look out of place in the 7th arrondissement in Paris – only with twice the space of the average room in a boutique hotel in that city, even paying twice the room rate for this one, and with a discount. The owner is a pretty, resourceful, dynamic and helpful blonde who collects the work of new and interesting painters. This was the witty picture above the bed in my room, which made me burst out laughing when I arrived hot, tired, and severely stressed by trivial – but cumulatively exhausting – annoyances in a brief stay in Zurich. Olten, a railway hub, is an excellent base for my work in Switzerland, and I expect to visit this hotel again.

I hardly heard the trains at all in my room at the back, and then only when I had the window open. I enjoyed watching them from the breakfast room in the morning. They looked like blown up children’s train sets.

This place would be paradise for trainspotters of every age.

I also rented for a week a sunny, clean and cheerful furnished apartment that belongs to the hotel in a nearby town. That was another very happy experience even though it could have been marred by a noisy inconsiderate neighbour unlike the perfectly behaved other guests. I complained about him reluctantly, and will always be grateful to the hotel’s managers and the owner for their prompt and whole-hearted support.

When I had trouble with a suitcase store in Zurich about getting a refund for a set of suitcase wheels billed as heavy-duty that collapsed in six hours, Walter – the manager on duty on that day – acted as my translator then advocate. From a short and efficient call to the store, he gathered enough information about the shop’s unhelpful reaction to let me get a complete refund from American Express.

Some of my best experiences as a lifelong traveller have been hugely surprising, and the Hotel Amaris was one of them.
