We had a fantastic corner room facing the lake with a cross breeze from the two windows. Ideal. We got off our 4 hour train at 10 pm so it was very convenient to just cross the street and go to sleep. The room was spacious and clean and had a range of options depending on how much morning light was desired. If you want a place in town this is not for you. However, we liked the location as it was at the top of the hill, hence the good view. Breakfast was above and beyond expectations and it was perfect weather for sitting outside.

Hotel is spotlessly clean and the service is a model of non-officious efficiency. Its rooms are a good size and everything works. We had a room with a balcony and view on the lake which we got at bargain rates. (Look out for those on their website). As it is a *** category it is no point hoping for room service. They do not do it. There is an excellent restaurant on the premises which attracts crowds and we can warmly recommend it on grounds of quality, quantity, freshness of ingredients and prices. There is also a Chinese restaurant which we did not try. Hotel is very conveniently situated across the road from the railway station, so there is no problem finding it. It has a terrace with view on the lake where you can have a meal (AT MEALTIMES) or a cup of coffee. Hotel breakfast ( a very decent buffet) is not included in the price of the room ; add on 15 CHF per person. The building is about a 10 minute walk away from the picturesque old town.

Room Tip: Look out for bargain rates and take a room with view on the lake if at all possible.

LOCATION: Hôtel Alpes et Lac is located at Place de la Gare 2, right across the road from Neuchâtel train station.

The Old Town & boat pier (whence cruises on Neuchâtel Lake depart) are about 15 minutes away on foot; just turn left upon exiting the Hotel, take the flight of steps leading down to the main road and follow the street signage for Place de Pury. Your return from town will involve a 5-minute trudge up a really steep slope.

If you don't feel like walking, there are several bus routes and also a furnicular service that connect the downtown area with the train station.

ROOMS: I stayed in 2 different rooms, both have wood flooring and a simple, soothing decor in cream and peach colours.

The Lake-View Room is spacious and furnished with the following: double bed; a pair of bedside tables with reading lamps; small work desk with 2 chairs; multi-channel flatscreen TV; minibar; luggage rack; full-length mirror; open-wardrobe with hangers; small cupboard with in-room safe. Its most attractive feature is the little balcony that looks out onto the lake & townscape.

The Street-View Room is smaller but similarly furnished except there is no balcony and its windows look out onto the main road and train station. There will be some noise from traffic and passing trains but not that noticeable if you keep the windows closed.

BEDS: The bed in the Lake-View Room was clean and comfortable. Bed linen was not changed during stay, probably to conserve energy & water. Extra pillows and blanket can be found inside the cupboard.

I got badly bitten by some bugs in the bed while staying in the Street-View Room. The itching was so unbearable that I had to take antihistamines and the rashes on my legs took over 2 weeks to fully subside... Request an immediate change of room if you encounter such nasty bugs too.

BATHROOMS: both were of good size, clean and brightly lit. Bathroom in Lake-View Room is furnished with the usual: vanity counter with mirror & wash basin; hairdryer; toilet; and shower stall. Bathroom in Street-View Room is similarly furnished but surprisingly, has a bathtub.

There was good water pressure and adequate hot water supply. Ample clean towels and extra toilet rolls were provided. Limited bathroom amenities but there are soap dispensers with hand-wash and 2-in-1 shampoo & shower gel. Towels are only changed upon request.

F&B: room rate did not include daily breakfast which was available at an extra CHF15. At the train station, you will find Aperto (convenience store), McDonald's, several kiosks and snack bars. There is also a small Coop supermarket beside the station.

SERVICE: Check-In & Out proceeded smoothly. Reception staff were friendly and fluent in both French and English. However, they weren't that helpful when it came to giving clear directions to various attractions in town.

I had originally reserved a Street-View Room on Booking.com but was assigned a Lake-View Room upon arrival. I was only informed that I had to pay a much higher rate when I checked with Reception the next morning. Do verify rates with Hotel if you are assigned a room different from that reserved.

As per request, my room was ready for an early Check-In which was much appreciated. A minor oversight: Housekeeping forgot to clear out trash from bathroom, probably in their haste to clean up the room...

FACILITIES: Other than an on-site restaurant, I did not notice any other facilities in the Hotel. There is apparently free WiFi throughout the property but I didn't make use of this so can't comment on reliability or speed of the internet connection.

In SUMMARY: If you intend to make day-trips around the region, Hôtel Alpes et Lac is a good choice due to its convenient location opposite the train station. If you prefer to be closer to the attractions within Neuchâtel, there are several affordable options in the heart of its atmospheric Old Town e.g. Auberg'Inn and L'Aubier Café-Hôtel.

Room Tip: Lake-View Rooms are worth splurging on if the weather is fine... Street-View Rooms are slightly smaller & noisier. Check that Beds are clean (i.e. No Bugs) before sleeping in them!

We just finished a stay at this hotel. The room was spacious, bathroom large. The breakfast was good with a wide variety of meats and fruits. Thd staff was bend ovef backward helpful as well.
We were in a lake view room which had a fabulous view of the alps and lake. The hotel is literally across the street from the train station so this is handy. From the train station you can take a funicular down to the lake shore or hop on a city bus right to Place Prury in town center.
One thing i need to mention is that my daughter had a rollaway bed. She was bitten at night by bugs which caused a red rash that had to be treated with medicine.
The hotel does not have AC so it can get very hot.

The Alpes et Lac may not be the most luxurious hotel in Neuchatel, but its location next to the station makes it the perfect place to leave your luggage and explore the town.

The rooms are large for the price, and now that summer is coming probably a bargain for this part of Switzerland. The location means that you can either take the funicular down to town, or walk down the path and little backstreets, to arrive there in 10 minutes max.

Breakfast is still good, if not amazing, and the service is personal and quick.

Room Tip: Try to get a room facing towards the lake.
