Owner description: Around 735/736, southern German nobles founded a small monastery at the site of today's Hof area, which was dedicated to St Mauritius. Around 1135, the autonomous monastery was attached to the Provostship of Murbach (Alsace) and St Leger was named patron of the church. In 1291, the Abbey of Murbach was forced to sell the Provost's Church and its belongings to the Habsburgs. In 1332, Lucerne joined the Helvetic Confederation. By 1433, the City of Lucerne had regained its rights from the Habsburgs, including those affecting the mo- nastery. In 1455/56, the Benedictine monastery was converted into a convent of Canon Regulars. Since then, the Canon Regulars have devoted themselves to the Liturgy of the Hours every day in the mornings and evenings. On Easter Sunday 1633, the church was burned to its foundations. The Jesuit Brother Ja- kob Kurrer from Ingolstadt was charged with the reconstruction of the church. Its consecration took place after the installation of the art works in 1644.

This was a nice finding in town...so majestic and imposing in such a pleasant street and place. Don't miss it.

There are so many churches to see and most are worth visiting as this one is. It is hard to phantom how they build these churches. Nice quite place to sit and pray, light a candle or just absorb all the beauty everywhere you look.

Built in the 1400's, Hofkirche lends two large steeples to the Lucerne landscape. Like most European churches, it is open to the public. The inside is magnificent, of course, but my favorite is the cemetary that runs down the sides and across the back of the church. So beautiful! Right before Christmas, candles line the multitude of steps leading to Hofkirche's entrance. It is an incredible sight. Great photo opps include the church itself, but also if you stand at the entrance and look down the steps away from the church, you have a beautiful shot of one of the main streets in the city.

I frequent this church every Sunday for the vesper service. The church itself is gorgeous and the service is very relaxing and a good place to meditate.

There is a sign at the front entrance about their iPhone app which serves as an audio guide. I didn't have cell phone service, so I couldn't download it before going in.

Inside and out are kind of mediocre. Although the surrounding wall that is also a cemetery is interesting.

The automatic doors at the front entrance are kind of eerie, but in a fun way.
