Owner description: Around 735/736, southern German nobles founded a small monastery at the site of today's Hof area, which was dedicated to St Mauritius. Around 1135, the autonomous monastery was attached to the Provostship of Murbach (Alsace) and St Leger was named patron of the church. In 1291, the Abbey of Murbach was forced to sell the Provost's Church and its belongings to the Habsburgs. In 1332, Lucerne joined the Helvetic Confederation. By 1433, the City of Lucerne had regained its rights from the Habsburgs, including those affecting the mo- nastery. In 1455/56, the Benedictine monastery was converted into a convent of Canon Regulars. Since then, the Canon Regulars have devoted themselves to the Liturgy of the Hours every day in the mornings and evenings. On Easter Sunday 1633, the church was burned to its foundations. The Jesuit Brother Ja- kob Kurrer from Ingolstadt was charged with the reconstruction of the church. Its consecration took place after the installation of the art works in 1644.

The Twin Spires of this church standout especially as it is near the lake and centre square. Walk the stairs and you get a nice view back to the lake and chapel bridge. I found this a nice church and worth visiting. Not far from the lion monument also.

This is a beautiful church to visit near the Lake. Not as glamorous as other churches in Europe but very beautiful nonetheless. You can visit it free and then walk over to the Lion of Lucerne Monument which is only a few blocks away.

My first visit to St Leodegar's Church was by appointment to play the magnificent organ in the rear gallery. Actually there is more of the organ high up in the roof space, but you cant see that. And there is another complete organ down the front near the altar. But the main organ is truly an impressive instrument. It is the second largest organ in Switzerland and ranks among the largest in the world.
To play an instrument like this is a great privelige and I am thankful I had that opportunity. It can be so quiet as to be almost inaudible. Then with some of the powerful stops added it can roar like a thunder storm. The dynamics are amazing and sound fantastic in this beautiful church.
My second visit to the church was a few days later when I went to hear the monks chant their service of prayers. The Gregorian chant could never be heard better than in this highly resonant environment and sung by these dedicated men.
To have constructed such an edifice that has stood for such a long time in this place is a noble and grand expression of faith. It was humbling to have experienced this place and to have shared just a little in the faith of those who put it there.

Take a few minutes to visit this church located on the shores of the Ruess. There is no charge for entry, and I find it one of the most beautiful in Switzerland.
