We have been recently in Luzern and by change we ended up at the Unicum restaurant. The service was fantastic and even though we didnt speak any german they automaticly change into english and few words in Spanish! They have a great and big menu. And quality and price are good!! I highly recomend it!!

This was an incredible restaurant. The waiter was very friendly and kindly offered us advice when we asked for it. The menu was quite varied and had a very wide variety of chicken dishes that were cooked to your liking. Everything, from the appetizer, to the éntre was delicate in taste including the different sauces. The waiting period was a bit long since they make all their dishes from fresh material, so in the end, it was well worth the wait. Should definately try their succulant "small chicken" in butter sauce, or the flambéed whisky chicken. They served us comIemenory liqures with the bill, though not sure if this is standard. We strongly recommend this restaurant and the only negative thing about it is that there only is one of them in the world!

We do visit Switzerland a few times a year and we enjoy going to new restaurants.

The restaurant Unicum apparently just reopened in May and some local friends in Lucerne took us there for a real "Güggeli"-Dinner, as our whole family loves chicken.
.
We were curious how the Unicum prepares them and what kind of sauces these come with, especially as we have been to a few outstanding places for chicken in Switzerland in the past.

We got to the Restaurant rather late (around 10pm) and we were kind of skeptical if they would still serve us, as in Switzeralnd after 10pm you usually run into challenges to still get some quality food (except for if you're fancy to enjoy some KFC or McD fast food).

After a very warm welcome we were seated and they took our orders - in perfect English, which honestly speaking is remarkable in this country as everyone seems to speak a few languages fluently. As an American you sometimes feel completely embarrassed not speaking just a few bits and pieces of German...

Our friends told us that the restaurant gets their chicken from a company called "KNEUSS" - you will see this brand/sign on their menus, which apparently is the prime address for quality chicken in Switzerland.

After 35 minutes we got our spicy "Güggeli" with French fries and some butter sauce. What a dream! The freshly grilled chicken with this butter sauce was just melting on your tongue and the meal was obviously gone in no time. An absolutely outstanding dinner.

No wonder our kids were begging to eat there again and we couldn't resist to have another "Güggeli" Lunch at the Unicum just two days later!

Highly recommendable and a must for a chicken lover - freshly grilled. not deep-fried as you get them very often in the US or in fast food locations.

This is quite possibly the worst restaurant I have ever been to.

Firstly upon arriving the waitress came to take our drinks order. She spoke in German so I apologised and explained we speak English. To our amazement she started to tut and moan under her breath - the menu is in English so you'd think they might be expecting the occasional English visitor... Not a great start

After placing our food order we had to wait for over an hour to get our starters - which were wrong... The starters we deep fried garbage which a Kebab shop would do with more skill and finesse.

The main meal took yet another 45 mins to arrive and this was bad. I ordered their "special" chicken and fries - the only thing that was special about this was the fantastic lack of flavour and sad execuse for a portion of fries.

My wife ordered the chicken skewer which was bland and was accompanied with warm veg (which had been cooked 5 hours earlier)

To sum up the food it's almost as if the cook had never seen an oven or a chicken before!

In total it took them 2.5 hours to produce a meal Nandos can do in 15mins - please note the food tastes nothing like Nandos.

My advice would be to avoid Unicum and go to KFC the food and service will be better and you will get to eat before 10pm!

Alternatively take a walk into the Swiss mountains with your Swiss Army knife - hunt down a wild chicken. Slaughter it, pluck it and cook it over an open fire , this will probably be quicker than going to Unicum.

I'd rather ride a Swiss mountain goat bareback than have to go through that kitchen nightmare again.
