This is a wonderful day trip. In the winter you can only take the cable cars and gondolas. The reception area at the top has been beautifully expanded and remodeled.

One of the great all day trips in Switzerland is atrip up to Mt. Pilatus. Take the trolleybus from the central train station in Lucerne to the town of Kriens. LED signs in the trolleybus tell you when you get there. The half hour cable car ride affords a spectacular view of the surrounding area as you climb. After lunch at the top, take the Pilatusbahn cog railway (the steepest cog railway in the world) down to the lake side town of Alpnachstad and take a lake boat (or local train) back to Lucerne. You can do the trip in reverse but it tends to be more crowded.

from the top its a must, to take the 10minutes walk up to "Esel" to get a view for Gods. Hope the weather allows you as well to see up to Germany, but all the lakes down there.

It was during the summer (June). The mount is really nice but crowded, however I've went down until Lucerne by foot through the slops. 5 hours in a half walking mostly alone and having astonishing views every turn. You don’t need any special gear but just follow the tracks. Escargots, rabbits, small water fountains and silence were the companion. I could listen to my own thoughts so clearly. Sum up? King for a day (That one), fool for a life...

I decided to take the cable cars from Kriens up Pilatus on a cloudy, snowy day. I figured there wouldn't be much view from the top but I liked the idea of going up anyway. The first cablecar is a 4-person cabin and at the transfer station you swap into a 40-person gondola. As we approached the last cable tower before the top, we broke out of the cloud into bright sunshine and it was spectacular. The hotels are interesting even if you're not staying there - Pilatus Kulm has some unique architecture. The gift shop is worth a visit and the hot chocolate place was doing a brisk trade mid-december. But there's a walkway carved into the rock of the mountain on the north side that nobody seemed to be using. The entrance to it is tucked away through a glass door in the far corner of the level where the gift shop is located. The walkway leads all around the north face of Pilatus with carved-out viewpoints at several key locations. Even with the blanket of cloud covering the valleys below, the view from this 'dragon' walkway is spectacular.
On the main outdoor observation level, looking southwest, you can see the Eiger and Jungfrau - an equally spectacular view. If you don't mind the snow, and fancy the idea of a much cheaper than normal ticket, mid-winter is the time to do this particular trip. Allow about 3 hours to get up, look around and get back down. The cog railway was closed in the winter so I can't comment on that.
