Owner description: The private collection of Lucerne art dealer Angela Rosengart is open to the public since spring 2002. Over 200 important paintings and drawings by more than twenty world famous 19th and 20th century masters (Cezanne, Monet, Matisse, Picasso, Klee, Miro and many others) are on display in a neo-classical building specially remodelled for this purpose. Near the railway station.

Right in the center of Luzern. It houses a extensive collection of Picassos without it being over crowded. Actually it is one of the sights the gets overlooked the most. It also has Matisse, Chagall, Juan Gris, and many works by Switzerland son, Paul Klee. Finally a place you can see masterpieces without having to do lines. Art lovers will not be disappointed. I live here so I go often. It is great for solo, couple, family but strollers are not allowed so you must carry your child/baby.

IF you are in luzern you would do an enormous mistake by not visiting this museum

Spent about 2 hours at the museum. A huge collection of Picasso's work. My favourites were works from Paul Klee and Matisse. A must see.

I'm giving 5 stars based on the amazing collection, but i do agree with one of the other reviews that the receptionist was rude and arrogant and looked down at me like a peasant. NO PHOTOS!
Anyway - snotty desk clerks aside this collection is amazing. More
Picasso works than the Picasso museum in Barcelona - and a lot
of his later work. And a great photo completion of him working. Also an extensive Paul Klee floor and other works by Matisse, Kandinsky, Chagall, Cezanne, Renoir and more. Allow min 1.5 hours. And pricey at 18 Swiss Francs.

We recently chose to visit Lucerne expressly so that we could see the Rosengart Collection, and I would do it again in an instant. The whole collection can easily be seen in a couple of hours - or if you are interested in art, could take most of a day. The 125 Klee works which are displayed in the basement (actually the vaults of the banks which used to occupy the building) were his own collection - sold to the Rosengarts by his widow. I love Klee, and there are few galleries with large collections such as this - it is very special. Information sheets in several languages well-explain each piece as well as the various stages of Klee's career, his inspiration and philosophy. Upstairs is a large Picasso collection, including several paintings of Angela Rosengart, and a smaller collection of other paintings of the period (Chagall, Cezanne, Monet...) It is thoughtfully organized in large airy rooms, and again has information sheets in several languages which allow you to read as much, or as little, as you like about each period, painter, and piece. Although the Picassos are the best known part of this collection, we were particularly taken by a few of the Chagalls - they are very special, unique works. The photographs and videos are also probably interesting, but honestly, we concentrated on the art and were satisfied by it alone. The Rosengart is covered by the Swiss Pass if you have one, but if you don't, have your hotel give you a "Visitor's Card". It's free and gets you discounts many places, including the Rosengart!
