After being refused a refund 6 months in advance because of their "no refund policy on special rates" we were somewhat pleased to be notified upon check-in that we would be receiving a hotel credit of half our deposited amount. We chose to use it towards dinner at the hotel, which was extremely overpriced and practically took up our entire credit for one pot of fondue split between the two of us and 2 drinks. We then sat for literally 30 minutes while they tried to figure out how to apply the credit from the hotel to the hotel restaurant, again the manager seemed to care less. To be fair, we did have a nice room with a balcony overlooking the river and Mt. Pilatus. It was located close to the train station, less than a five minute walk with luggage, and was central to the downtown shopping district. Despite the great location, we were treated with great disrespect from the hotel office on several occasions. Customer Service did not seem to be of any importance to this hotel.

We arrived in Lucerne and spotted Des Alpes as soon as we left the station and yes you do enter from the street behind which puts you right at the reception desk. We love Lucerne and visited in 1991 and wished we knew about Des Alpes then. Ingrid greeted us upon our arrival and gave us a map of the area and we soon checked in. The kids had a room on a different floor. Both rooms were just great. The kids had a bigger bathroom in their twin but other than that the rooms were the same, spacious and clean and I just felt so at home here. The breakfast was cereal, breads, juices, yoghurts, coffees, cheese and meats. Internet was expensive. We went to Mt Titlis from here and had a ball. We did snow tubing and sledding which when we arrived at the bottom was told now we were at the bottom if we wanted to go back up it would cost us again so make sure you've had enough of the top before you come down. The restaurants aren't overly expensive at Titlis. Much the same as Lucerne. We ate at the self serve caffeteria at Titlis and also at the local co-op in Lucerne. The co-op in Lucerne is a great shop with a supermarket on the basement floor and then all retail and a self serve restaurant at the top. Lucerne actually has a lot of supermarkets if you just stroll around the streets near the hotel. Plenty of souvenier shops and they all seem to have the same prices for swiss army knives and other things so buy where you feel good because no where will be cheaper. We had to write to Des Alpes and request an extra night as we were ahead of schedule by a day and they fitted us in no problems. The station has so many food shops underneath and a nice sausage man at the top. Burger King and Mc Donalds are also across the road from the station. We treated ourselves to a lovely meal on our last night across the old bridge at a place called Rossini's. So delicious. Pizza, Pasta, Bread, and they are so quick and attentive for your time there. Thanks for a wonderful stay Ingrid. All the staff and cleaners and breakfast ladies were great. A word of warning if you want to go to the casino, bring your driver's lisence or Passport as they need i.d. which we didn't have when we walked there (15 mins)

Hotel des Alpes sits on the picturesque riverbank of the Reuss, right in the heart of Luzern's Old Town. If you request for a room w/river view, you can enjoy a wonderful view of the iconic Chapel Bridge (Kapellbrucke). Its central location meant that most places of interest are within walking distance & Luzern is a lovely town to explore on foot... The historic bldgs around the Hotel have beautiful facades exquisitely decorated with frescoes or sgraffito coupled with interesting architectural features.

In the vicinity of Hotel des Alpes, you'll find plenty of dining options ranging from fast food joints, cafes, pizzerias to a variety of restaurants serving traditional Swiss cuisine or more exotic ethnic fare. Avid shoppers will enjoy their time in Luzern as there are lots of boutiques & souvenir shops offering great buys and quirky finds.

The Hotel is an easy 5-min walk away from the train station, once you exit the station, you'd see it across the River Reuss. The staff @ Reception were efficient & helpful and the Check-In process was fairly quick & hassle-free.

The small single room i stayed in was situated on the top floor & seemed like what used to be part of the attic with a low sloping ceiling. It was well-appointed with modern furnishings & the usual expected amenities: a comfy single bed; tiny bedside table w/small tabletop fan (useful in the summer heat as room has no aircon); writing desk w/chair; cable TV; mini-bar with coffee/tea-making facilities; closet space; luggage rack. The bathroom was of an adequate size & was equipped with a hairdryer. Overall, the room was more than satisfactory.

My only grouse about this Hotel was the miserable breakfast served here which was very limited in its spread & variety. It was among the worst breakfasts i've had throughout my 5-week trip. For the rate charged, i would expect much more than this... If only the Hotel would offer a cheaper Room-Only rate, i'd gladly forgo the breakfast.
