“Fabulous location”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 14, 2011

This hotel is in the heart of the old town. Our room had a balcony overlooking the water. The scenery from the room is beautiful. The beds are typical swiss luxury comfort, the rooms are clean and the breakfast is good. The staff of the hotel are friendly. We would definately come back to this city and this hotel.

Very affordable and includes breakfast in the cost. Exceptionally scenic. Situated on the lake with the covered bridge. 10 minute walk to the train station, market, and very close to shops. Saturday morning farmer's market in front of the hotel with all the local produce, etc.
Only negative comment would be the price of dinner. A bit high for what one got. Otherwise, it couldn't have been more perfect

We stayed at the Hotel Des Alpes for 2 nights. We had a room on the 5th floor with a balcony and that was worth every CHF. It is a short walk from the train station across the bridge. What a view! We had a 180 degree view of the River Reusse, city, train station, lake, shops, and bridges. The room was small but suited our needs. Free Wi-Fi is available. There is a small elevator that we appreciated rather than dragging our suitcases up 5 flights of stairs. The continental breakfast on the sun terrace was beautiful. We were also just a 2 minute walk from the Stadtkellar Swiss Folklore restaurant where we had a very enjoyable evening - make reservations early though! It we ever have the good fortune to return to Lucerne we would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: ask for a balcony room

If you are going to visit many places in Switzerland and Lucerne is part of your itinerary, this hotel is quite perfect because of its proximity to the train station. It's a short distance so it's not cumbersome to drag your luggage. The location is just across the river.

The hotel is an old building with an elevator that can fit only 2 people with luggages. Our room has a view to the Chapel bridge. Though it is facing the promenade where people eat, we didn't have a problem with the noise in the evening. Probably because we are on the top floor. The bathroom was modern enough. The bed was ok. The only thing I didn't like is that the floor is carpeted.

I don't recommend you eat in their restaurant. It wasn't good.

Lucerne is a very expensive city, but Hotel des Alpes was reasonable by Lucerne standards, and it was absolutely wonderful. It was an easy walk from the train station and conveniently located for everything we wanted to do. We had a riverfront room, and the view was just amazing. I normally wouldn't think it was worth the extra money to pay for a room with a view, but this was worth every penny. It was so wonderful to wake up and look out at the swans floating on the river, with the Alps in the background. The hotel is quaint on the outside but modern and comfortable on the inside. The room was spacious (bathroom was small, but completely adequate), and the breakfast was very good. The staff were all very helpful, and the whole place had a very gemutlich feel to it. I would definitely stay there again if I return to Lucerne!

Room Tip: Get a river view if you can afford it.

We arrived at the hotel after driving in from Zurich. Even though I had asked, only when we got there, parking on the street and shleping the bags with us to the hotel, did we learn that it is possible to drive into pedestrian area to unload and load luggage.
The woman at the reception did not seem to excited about us arriving, was occupied with computer. We received two rooms on second floor facing alley, which was OK.
The rooms are small but comfortable. The bathrooms seem to have been refurbished recently so they were OK. Breakfast is simple (European standard).
Location is fantastic! Across from Kapellbruke
Breakfast after 09:00 is a bit hectic and the woman who runs the dining room does not have much patience...to say the least.
We had dinner one night in the hotel restauraunt downstairs - Stay Away!!
Fish and Chips are terrible!!!

The woman at the reception did not even bother to greet us when we arrived at the hotel. She appeared to be totally absorbed by something in the computor. We waited for her to finish. She then processed our check in a very mechanical manner. Fortunately we had met many Swiss people in the hospitality sector by then to know that many of them are very friendly and helpful. We stayed at two rooms on the top fifth floor. Each room had a fantastic view of the Chapel bridge, which was the only good thing during our two night stay. Being on the top floor, the rooms became really hot from the direct sun. There was no air-conditioning. When we raised our concern about our rooms to the staff at the reception, she simply asked us to leave the window open throughout the night. This did not make our rooms cooler. Leaving the windows open also allowed the spiders to come into the rooms. We went back to the reception the following day and saw a different staff member. She was more friedly and arranged two fans for us, however, the heat retained in the room was so intense that the fan did not seem to do much. One of the rooms had a sensor light in the bathroom which kept switching off during the shower. The buffet breakfast was the worst among the four Swiss hotels that we stayed at.

Room Tip: Go to a hotel with air-conditioning.
