“Basic Hotel”
Reviewed January 12, 2008

We stayed in Pension Villa Maria for one night in September 2007. The hotel was basic but clean and Maria (the hostess) was friendly. The breakfast was good. We paid 160 francs for the night which was very overpriced for such a basic room. In addition when I elected to pay by credit card Maria charged an extra 5% for a credit card fee (so bring cash).

The hotel is situated near the lake about a 30min walk from the main tourist area in Lucerne. It is situated on a busy road so traffic noice at night was a problem. Pension Villa Maria is suitable for older travellers (we would not recommend it for younger travellers). The hotel has a few car parking spaces available.

My 6-year-old daughter and I stayed at Villa over a 4-day weekend in October for the Lucerne marathon. For marathon runners, if the course stays the same, the pension is on the start line! We enjoyed our stay in the pension and the city.

We paid 90 Euro/night for a triple room--no private bathroom. The three rooms I saw each had a sink in the room, so that made it more convenient. For us, it was not an issue to share the bathroom. Frau Winkler did not confirm our reservation in writing or email, but we had no problems when we arrived with either the price quote or reservations. She was extremely helpful and gracious during our stay.

The pension doesn't overlook the water, but is very close to the water walk (2-minute walk). It takes about 15 minutes to walk to the old town, but it's a beautiful walk along the lake through a tree-lined path passing a children's park. The pension is also very close to the transportation musuem (about a 5-minute walk).

The only drawback I would mention is that the pension has the potential to be a little noisy. Our room faced the street and we could hear traffic outside our window and the train. Also, you can easily hear other guests talking in the hall and stairwell. For us, this was not a problem, but if you are a light sleeper you may want to request a room away from the street. As for the hallway noise, it didn't happen after 10pm. I only noticed it because my daughter goes to sleep at 8pm.

We would definitely stay here again especially considering the price of other lodging in the city.

Maria was charming, and gracious. She was helpful and friendly. She made suggestions for sightseeing during our stay that were quite helpful.

The accomodations were acceptable, but not luxurious, as was the breakfast.

Our problem came when paying. We had booked directly by e-mail with Maria for a room for 3 people for 2 nights. We were clearly quoted a price of 160 Swiss Francs per night. When we paid, the price was 190 Swiss Francs per night. The explaination was that the 160 quote was for 2 people, and that her understanding of English was not good (on the e-mail) as the reason for the discrepancy.

Beware, confirm the price upon arriving!

My wife and I spent our first two nights in Switzerland at this B&B. While we requested a room with bathroom/shower, one was not available and we settled for a sink in the room with bathroom down hall. This was the only negative.

Maria was fantastic and attended to our every need. Room and bathroom were spotless. Breakfast excellent and plentiful. Location from the old town was a healthy fifteen minute walk, but again, only a minor inconvenience. And if you don't want to walk it, there is a bus stop nearby.

If ever in Luerne in the future, there is no doubt that we will stay at Maria's.

Maria was such a warm host, from the time we arrived until the end of our 2-nights stay. She always checked to ensure that all of our needs were taken care of, and often helped with info/tips about the travel plan. We even went lake-cruising based on her recommendation, which was something we didn't plan initially, and we ended-up enjoying so much! (and it's free because we had Swiss Pass). She also gave us free tickets for the Titlis ice-flyer cable-car.
Our room was very clean, with large bed, large windows facing the Lucern lake, and bathroom with big bathtub. Just note that the "private bathroom" is actually outside the bedroom.
We enjoyed the breakfast too, especially the nice hot chocolate.
At the end, staying in Villa Maria felt like staying in our parent's home for us! As the other reviewers noted : it's the "Maria factor" that made us want to stay again in this place.

We booked our stay at the Villa based on the previous reviews here. The price is great, the owner is friendly and efficient.

The rooms are simple, no TV. I had a sink in my room, but the toilet and shower were shared. We could park the car right outside the door.

The Villa is located a bit out of town, we got tired of the 15-20 minute walk into town - though it was a pretty walk along the lake.

Stayed for two nights at the end of August in room #10. Located next to shower and bathroom, so it was a little noisy when people would use them at night. The rooms are plain, but I'm not in Luzern to stay in my room. Maria was hospitable and the buffet breakfast was great to fuel up for a day of sightseeing. For the price (140 CHF/night), can't be beat.
