We arrived after a long journey from Italy, though initial impressions were good - a great view of Lucerne for example. Soon things started to go wrong - my wife noticed that when she stumbled on entering the hotel, none of the staff offered to help. I didnt actually realise this, and we were shown to our room... all going well from my point of view...until...the bedroom door was opened.

Once the staff left we expressed dismay at how ridiculously small the room was - it had a large bathroom, but a tiny bedroom floorspace. Being a couple with a one and half year old baby we were shocked. We then left the hotel for a spot of sight-seeing having explained to a polite younger manager that the room provided was a joke - there was no way a family could move around comfortably. He actually agreed and said he would do what he can.

We returned late in the evening to find a note saying that no change of room was possible but they would give us free breakfasts. My wife lay back on the very small bed, and the piece of junk rolled forward from the wall - this was a bed with wheels ...effectively a camp bed!!! I sat there, looked around the room and thought this is effectively student accommodation. I then tried to move to the other side of the bedroom and found myself having to step over our baby. By now, I was getting pretty furious - we went downstairs and started to explain this to the receptionist. She started to tell us, quite unbelievably, that this was the room that we had paid for. She also said that this was the first time anyone had complained about a bed rolling back from the wall. I asked to see the manager at this point, and we were told that no one was available apart from a night manager. I said ok we want to speak to him. I saw her talking to this manager and saw him shake his head with a look of arrogant disdain on his face. She came back and said nothing could be done - the only room available was 4 standards above ours. Ok, but this was NOT the room we were under the impression we were getting (she INSISTED we had booked a small double hillside room..when the only room type available under the booking website was a double room), and they had provided us with a camp bed. This receptionist was quite unbelievably telling us we were wrong but she agreed to come and see the bed - she had to be convinced that we were not lying about this!

Once upstairs, and once she had been shown the camp bed with wheels, I demanded she show us on the hotel website the photos of the room we were allocated. She was convinced the photos and room type (small double) were there, but guess what...couldnt find them. I also showed her the photos of the rooms on the independent hotel booking service website and she agreed those photos showed much larger rooms. At this point she leaves the room, saying that she will see what she can do ie whether we can move to the room that was talked about previously. A older man turns up, the night manager, and tells us to pack our bags and move to the sixth floor. With an unbelievably pompous attitude he watches us, struggle to pack everything while our baby is running around and even has the audacity to tell us to hurry up. We arrive on the 6th floor.. given the talk about this room, and how it was 4 notches above ours, we were expecting a rock star suite. In fact, it was merely the standard type of room that you might stay in during a stay in a typical luxury chain. That the hotel was previously refusing to upgrade us despite our grievances was quite incredible to me.

The next morning, after a very warm night due to the lack of air conditioning in the room, and despite being stressed out at our experience and thus not having had great sleep, we go down to breakfast (quite a good breakfast by the way).

The general manager of the hotel turns up, tells us what a cutie our baby and tells us we are being thrown out of the hotel for the use of profanities in the conversation with the arrogant female receptionist the previous evening (thanks for asking our baby's name though!). We were totally shocked by this time and didnt defend ourselves. However, subsequently we could not recall using profanities during the conversation the previous evening. The conversation with that member of staff did become very tense indeed because of her attitude - I have NEVER been told in a hotel of supposed repute and standing, that I was plain wrong. This was not even expressed in a polite disarming way.

Our experience was clearly not a one off. There are a number of recent reviews that allude to the same circumstances - being allocated a poor room and "being laughed at" and the (probably same) receptionist being unable to find the allocated room on the hotel website. I would recommend the people running this hotel consider the feedback that is starting to emerge in these reviews and do not arrogantly dismiss it as seems to have been the case the night of our stay. I was told by the manager who evicted us from the hotel that the Swiss talk to each other face to face (in reference to our supposed use of profanities)... do they also rudely and arrogantly dismiss suggestions that the product has been mis-sold and other irrefutable facts (such as the rolling bed)?

Montana's staff dress casually. Unfortunately with that seems to come an arrogance and disrespect for customers. There almost seems to be a belief amongst staff and management that people are lucky to stay at this hotel.

As things turned out we moved on to another hotel, this time on the lake front. For a fractionally higher price we stayed in a far superior room with infinitely more pleasant staff... and in a far better location.

Frankly, this was an appalling experience... our stay in Lucerne was completely ruined by these people.

Dear Julesee

We feel in need of explaining our point of view in reaction to your heavy accusation towards our staff’s attitude in this review .

It is our deepest belief that none of our staff member would ever represent an arrogant or disrespectful attitude towards our guests at any time.

The snappish reactions by our receptions followed after being verbally insulted in an aggressive language that was completely inappropriate. The words used did not belong to a constructive discussion and would not have been accepted by any hotel.

The throw-out was a reaction of that humiliation and not because you stated your point concerning the room. This has nothing to do with arrogance but is to protect staff members of such outburst of fury.

That next to the breakfast your night was complete free of charge was a logical consequence and wasn’t mentioned in your feedback.

We wish you all the best.

The Montana is a beautiful hotel with breath-taking views of the mountains and Lake Lucern. Definitely listen to the directions to take the short funicular from the street; the other path is not fun carrying luggage. We enjoyed two lovely nights there in a large, modern room, again with a great view. We also had a delicious dinner in the restaurant. Our server was the best part though. He was very friendly and made us feel welcome and special.

Room Tip: Ask for a lake view; it may be more expensive, but is definitely worth it.

We had booked through Inghams, a travel company who specialise in Lake and Mountain holidays for one week at the Hotel Montana.
On our outbound trip we got caught in the turmoil at London Heathrow and our 09.40 flight was cancelled and we were forced to queue for 5 hours to re-book and managed to get on the 16.10 to Zurich and eventually reached the hotel at around 22.15.
We were met by a very pleasant receptionist called Maria who dealt with all our needs to book in and as we had missed dinner said that they had arranged for sandwiches to be sent to the rooms.
Our room overlooked the lake and I have to agree with everyone that the view is stunning, the room was very clean and tidy.
All the staff were polite and courteous and could not do enough to help. The food in the dining room was excellent as again was the service.
The location of the hotel is ideal, it is a pleasant 15 minute walk around the lake to the centre.
The only downside is the small guest lounge for non smokers, which one night was closed for a private party and another night full of non residents.

We stayed at the Montana in Lucerne for 2 nights on our honeymoon and my birthday was also during our stay.

The view from our room was sooooo amazing and I could have admired the view all day! This was the main reason for choosing to stay at the Montana rather than in the centre of town. It is only a 10 minute walk into town.

The building is historic so don't expect uber modern decor or a swipe card key haha.

The staff at the hotel gave us a very warm welcome and everyone was very pleasant which was lovely! We were given complimentary wine from the mini bar for our honeymoon and on the day of my birthday there was a birthday card left in our room from the staff and chocolates! Very nice of them! We had dinner at the restaurant which was amazing! Such a nice setting with great service and food.

Excellent stay at Montana and it really made us fall in love with Lucerne!

This hotel is very high quality for the money. Our room was extremely clean and well appointed. The bathroom was huge! The view of Lake Luzern and the surrounding mountains from our room and balcony was so relaxing after our busy days. Breakfast is not included, but is varied and delicious. The tram from the street is a lifesaver since the hotel is high up a hill.

Room Tip: Try to get a lake view room.
