We spent 4 nights at Hotel des Balances in July of this year. We arrived rather early (during a heat wave, no less), but our room was ready so we were able to drop off our luggage and freshen up. The rooms are smaller, but lovely and well appointed. We splurged for a river facing room and ended up in room 503 (on the top floor). The room itself had a very comfortable bed (with down duvet and pillows), mini bar, coffee maker, TV, air conditioning, etc. It also had a good sized terrace with a retractable awning, two chairs and a table, and a lounger. The view is phenomenal and I highly recommend spending a little more for it. We booked through a friend, who is a travel agent, and ended up with breakfast included. Again we were not disappointed. The staff were all very courteous and welcoming, the breakfast delicious and varied, and the location absolutely perfect (a short 5 minute walk from the trains, boats and buses).

I chose this hotel based on great TripAdvisor reviews and how nice it looked in pictures. I was a little disappointed with my stay here. Now don't get me wrong, this is not a bad hotel. The rooms were spacious and modernly decorated. The service was great. We were given gummies, walnuts, and fruit upon our arrival. The view of the river was fantastic. The location was good in relation to the train station. With luggage it was a bit of a walk, but not too far. But, as I said before, this hotel had some weak points. We stayed there at a time of record heat in Lucerne and the lack of A/C made it tough to sleep. But, they do provide you with a fan and you can open the windows. Another weak point is the noise. If you have a room facing the Old Town, it can get very loud late at night and early in the morning. Overall, I would stay here again but it would not be my first choice in Lucerne.

Room Tip: Choose a room facing the river, as rooms facing the Old Town hear the constant noise of the Old Town...

Have just returned from a 7 night stay in Luzern at the Hotel des Balances. We booked through Kuoni who gave its rating as 4star and we opted to upgrade to superior room overlooking the river. As we booked in January 2013 we optimistically hoped for a room with a balcony. On entering our room on the fourth floor we were slightly disappointed to find it to be rather small in area with no balcony. It would certainly not merit a 4star superior rating in the UK. There was no air conditioning at all, merely a fan. As I have spent many a summer in Switzerland I was aware that temperatures can rise to over 30degC and I wondered just how this fan would cope. Having a shower during the day was not an option as the small bathroom became unbearably hot and my husband`s head almost touched the ceiling when he stood in the bath to access the shower.

We endured the discomforts of the room for 2 days before attempting to secure another room with a balcony to allow more ventilation, especially overnight. The receptionist we spoke to seemed a little annoyed by our request, and said that, as the building was old, they were not allowed to install air conditioning and we were unfortunate to have arrived during the hottest week of the year so far. She failed to realise that we had selected the second most expensive hotel in Luzern and did not expect to find such discomfort. 2 days later we secured a move to a much larger room with a balcony and a bathroom with a window on the third floor. The ceilings were much higher there and the room much cooler.

The hotel is famous for its gourmet meals, which were unfortunately too expensive for us to sample. The breakfast buffet was superb and eating on the river terrace was definitely a highlight of our stay.

Whilst there our Swiss friends came to stay for 2 nights also. They found the costs quite high, paying extra for breakfasts and overnight parking - there is no parking available at the hotel. We normally prefer to stay in such old buildings with character, but when it became impossible because of the heat to return to the room during the day to relax, then I`m afraid I did crave for a more modern building where I would be more physically comfortable.

Room Tip: In summer do not take the 4th floor and ascertain that there will be a balcony.

We recently spent 3 nights at this lovely stylish hotel. Our room with balcony over looking the river was superb. Spacious, modern and clean with stylish furniture and beautiful bathroom. Our children's room with old city view (more compact but still nice) also had a balcony. Beautifully presented breakfast served on the terrace overlooking the river with swans. However it would have been good if breakfast had been included in the room rate as it made the hotel that much more expensive when paying for 4 breakfasts. We asked for a recommendation for a good restaurant and the staff rang up and were lucky to get us into the Old Swiss House on a Saturday night at short notice (perhaps because the Lucerne festival was on that night.) where we had the most enjoyable dining experience. Would recommend this hotel and stay here again as it was a most enjoyable experience staying here. Thank you for a beautiful stay.

This is a beautiful hotel in a historic building in the heart of Lucerne, right on the river. The hotel has a very nice terrace with lovely views of the river and the town. The service was very good. Note that the rooms do not have air conditioning though -- was a bit of an issue during the recent heat wave. They do provide fans, but the rooms still got very warm during the days heat. Would stay there again in cooler weather.

The location is wonderful, with superb views over the river and city. Our room on the 4th floor at the front was large and very well equipped. Shame it isn't air conditioned, but this obviously isn't a problem most of the time.
Breakfast buffet is about the best I've ever seen, with vast range, beautifully presented, and staff offering eggs etc as required. Furthermore, the venue, sitting on the terrace by the river, is unbeatable.
Staff very helpful in all respects, speaking good English.
Dinner is admittedly not cheap, but top restaurant quality. We enjoyed a superb 4-course grill meal, which would stand up against the best. A gastronomic adventure!

Room Tip: Pay the extra for a room with a lake view

We loved this hotel with the great view across the river to see all the great buildings and sunsets. Very comfortable and clean. We had two decks. There are a few stairs to lug your luggage up. There is a ground floor entrance to restaurant so we left via that but don't know if they want that used for people checking in.

Room Tip: Choose room with river view.
