“"Swiss Franc" Is Their Favorite Word”
Reviewed June 4, 2013

35 Swiss Francs per night for parking, 35 Swiss Francs per night for a hide a bed (even with a reservation for three in the room), breakfast is an extra 20 to 40 Swiss Francs since I got a discounted room, etc., etc., etc. I felt like I was being robbed even before I made it to my room. The hotel desk staff was cold and unfriendly and obviously more interested in Swiss Francs than service. Please do not get me wrong. The rooms are very clean and modern (but a little snug). The beds are also very comfortable with very nice down comforters, and the location can't be beat. You are just down form the wooden bridge and a very short walk from the train station. But first impressions are hard to change! I won't be back.

Without doubt Lucerne is beautiful and we are so satisfied with our 2 night stay in Hotel des Balances. The hotel is less than a 10 minute stroll from the station across the medieval Kapellbruke Bridge. Our room was an upper floor double with twin balconies overlooking the river. There were extensive views across the square towards Mt Pilatus. The room was immaculately clean and well appointed to meet our needs and aspirations. The staff were polite and courteous and we took advantage of dining in the excellent (although expensive) restaurant on our first night. Breakfast was not included in our room tariff. Our lasting impression of Hotel des Balances is that it's a lovely building, professionally managed in a perfect location in a beautiful city - we're so pleased to have selected this hotel for our short stay in Lucerne.

Room Tip: Choose a room on an upper floor with a balcony overlooking the river.

This has to be one of the best hotels we have stayed in on our travels in Switzerland.
The location has to be second to none with its location on the side of the lake and the food amazing with every possible choice for breakfast you can think of.
However, what makes this hotel so amazing is the staff from the Reception Desk to the Bar and Restaurant, in fact everyone.
Nothing is too much trouble for them and they want to ensure you enjoy your stay at the Hotel.
This is our second visit to des Balances and had room 402 overlooking the lake, perfect!
The atmosphere is excellent and service is efficient and friendly, you are made to feel like a regular even on our first trip.
Our personal “thanks” to Mickella for suggesting a great local Swiss wine based on our style of wine we like to drink, she matched the choice perfectly and also to John for the Lamborghini cocktails!!
See you again des Balances!

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the lakeside, you will have excellent views

Two nights in Lucerne in May, 2013. Great city, ideal for a couple of days. This hotel is first rate and if you can afford it, well worth it. Make sure you get a river balcony room since that makes it all worthwhile. From the train station, just head out to the river in front of the station, look across the river toward the chapel (wooden) bridge and you will see the sign for the hotel on the opposite side of the river. Just cross the river, make a left along the river esplanade and two blocks and you are there. Lots of restaurants in the area, walk to all the sites. As for sites, the highlight for us was the Rosengart museaum, three blocks away. Picasso and Klee and tons to learn about each in a very doable and not overwhelming museum. Good restaurants across the river too, away from the tourist section. Loved the hotel, very romantic location. The hotel restaurant is not inexpensive.

Room Tip: you want to have river balcony room. Without being on the river, you don't need to spend the m...

I stayed at this remarkable hotel for four nights last week and believe me, the hotel was the highlight of my stay. Just across the river, conveniently located near the chapel bridge, the hotel offers all the comfort with excellent service and great food. We flew in from Zurich and took a train connection to the town of Luzern and the hotel is few minutes walk from there. Breakfast has great variety of fruits, cold meat and breads. The rooms are big with very comfort taken care of, including chocolate on the bedside at night. Special mention for ever cooperative Raquel at the front desk.

Stayed for 5 days in May. This place is what it's all about. amazing service, amazing staff, amazing rooms....try getting a $8000 Bang & Olufsen stereo at a Ritz or Four Seasons...you won't....every detail is incredibly thought out from the lighting scheme of the rooms to the whirlpool tub, balconies with AMAZING views of Chapel Bridge over the Rousse (sp?) and Mt. Pilatus peaking in the background. Step out and you are in the middle of SHOPPING HEAVEN!...amazing cafe's, shops, watches, chocolate, cameras, etc.etc..very close to the train station, close to the post office, close the the lake cruise boats....I can't say enough about this boutique hotel which in my opionin is 6 star luxury...way underrated. The other "big" hotels, are way too stuffy and don't have anywhere near the kind of view you get from the balconies at this hotel. HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

Room Tip: Make sure to get a balcony view over the water...swans, bridge, mountains...you WILL NOT be dissapoi...

This is our second time staying at this remarkable hotel on the river, across from the beautiful Jesuit Church. We returned again after four years, as we fell in love with the enchanting city of Lucerne. We flew in to Zurich, and took the short train from the airport to The train station in Lucerne, pulling our luggage to the hotel. Our room, 504, was requested! Yes, it is a small room, but the balcony is huge, with an automatic awning, two chairs, small table and chase lounge, and the view of the church and river is to die for!
In your room is a safe, adapter, mini bar, and a darling bathroom which has been updated. The front desk is very helpful, yet some things are lost in translation, and to be expected. Breakfast is very good, and has a great variety. If you don't see something just ask. Remember, this is Switzerland and air conditioning is not in this hotel. The people are wonderful and yes, the culture is different, but that is what makes it so a fantastic place to visit. I truly believe that I am in fairy tale land!

Room Tip: They have rooms with Juliet balconies and larger ones. You must request a larger room facing the ri...
