“Perfect Location in Lucerne”
Reviewed October 8, 2012

We stayed at this hotel for 4 nights in September, 2012. This is a beautiful hotel in the old section of Lucerne, with amazing views of the city. We stayed in a double room, with a balcony overlooking the river. Although the hotel is an older building, the rooms are updated in a modern boutique style. The balcony we had was very large, complete with a retractable awning and relaxing lounge chairs with cushions.
The room came equipped with a coffee and tea maker and unlimited supplies for making as much as we wanted. We also had air conditioning in this room, which was absent in many of the other places we stayed in Switzerland.
The breakfast buffet was all you could ask for, which selections of bread, cheese, fruit, hot breakfasts, coffee, tea, meat, juice, etc. The breakfast room was very relaxing and overlooked the river - a perfect way to start the day.
The location of this hotel is superb - within walking distance of the train station and right in the heart of historic Lucerne. This location is within an hour of Zurich airport, so it is an easy train ride to get your flight without having to stay in Zurich.

Room Tip: Location, Location! Ask for a room overlooking the river and Chapel bridge.

I work in the hotel industry in the United States and have stayed in all kinds of hotels and this is my favorite hotel I have ever visited. From the friendliness of the hotel staff to the decor of the room to the breakfast, dinner, and drinks, everything was absolutely perfect. The little touches that were added to our stay made it unforgettable. Thank you Hotel des Balances for adding to our wonderful visit to Switzerland!

Room Tip: We stayed on the side that overlooked one of the town squares, but the other side had views of the R...

I stayed at the Hotel des Balances on a recent family trip to Switzerland. It is located in the heart of the old city, overlooking the Reuss River. Leave the hotel through one door, and your in the middle of the old Weinmarkt, one of the central square of old town. Leave through another and you're strolling along the banks of the Reuss, with its restaurants and pubs. The hotel itself is a magnificent thing, an ancient building put to modern use. You can tell you're staying someplace special when tour groups routinely stop in front of it. The rooms are beautiful, and very well appointed. The ones we were staying in overlooked the Reuss and the city below -- a knockout view. The Hotel des Balances also boasts a top notch restaurant, apparently (did not eat there, but the bar was nice). The service was professional and efficient. My Dad thought they were a little supercilious ("They act kind of French") but I thought they were friendly enough and got the job done. As an international city, Lucerne is heavy on English speakers, and the staff in this hotel were excellent, BTW.

My room at the hotel was superb. I requested a room with a river view and was pleased to find that it had a balcony looking over the river and city. The bed was great, and the staff was extremely helpful. I only stayed two nights but wanted to stay longer. Another trip to Switzerland will find me back at the Hotel des Balances.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a river view.

We recently stayed at Hotel des Balances for four nights and had a wonderful time at this beautiful hotel! Our room had a river view with a little balcony, perfect for enjoying a glass of wine or breakfast in the morning. Upon arrival, our room was not quite ready so we were given a complimentary cocktail on the terrace lounge while our luggage was whisked up to our room. The room itself was luxurious with great amenities and the service was outstanding! We enjoyed a delicious and romantic dinner on the terrace overlooking the lights of the lights and flowers of Chapel Bridge.

This hotel started as an inn in the 1200's and retains the old-world charm while providing modern comforts. Lucerne is a beautiful city and our stay at Hotel des Balance was a key part of a magical stay!

Room Tip: If choosing a room over-looking the river be prepared to hear the church bells chime throughout the...

My wife and I just spent 3 nights at the Hotel des Balances and it was great. The rooms are very clean and spacious. The hotel staff was very friendly. We ate breakfast in the restaurant twice, buffet and ala carte, and both were very good. We had a room overlooking the water and the view was spectacular! If you are going to Lucerne this is the place to stay.

Once we upgraded to a river facing room, we extended our stay for a couple of extra days, such was the charm of the hotel and the city. Location is central. Walkable to just about everything in town. Good base for day trips. Rooms were clean and nicely furnished.
