I stayed here for two nights with my wife and a group of friends from Zurich. It's called Hotel Central for a reason. But as others have pointed out, almost all the hotels are fairly central anyway. It's just a minute or two (at most) walking from the station, and that's the same place from where to take the free ski bus to the slopes in the morning. Dropping off again in the afternoon is even closer to the hotel.
I used the free parking round the side of the hotel (a nice touch, as usually I have to pay per night), and in the hotel was greeted (in English) but a very friendly receptionist. First impressions of the hotel were "This isn't 5-star", and I wasn't wrong. It's a little bit cramped, the corridors are a little bit dingy, and there's a rickety door at the top of the first flight of stairs. Having said all that, the price was good (for Switzerland!), so it was roughly meeting expectations.
On the plus side, my room was a decent size, clean and tidy. Storage was fine for a weekend for two, but wouldn't have been enough for much longer. The beds were exceptionally comfy, and we both slept really well. There were en-suite facilities, and the shower was up to the usual levels of granite-cutting power.
The breakfast room looked a bit bare and "school dinners" on first impression, but the quality, selection and taste of the food on offer more than made up for this. In fact, on the second day we decided to go easy on the skiing and had a lovely hour taking it slowly over breakfast. There was plenty of fresh scrambled eggs, bacon and delicious bread on offer, so that was me sorted then.
On arrival we had been given a free drinks voucher for the pub next door. That was fairly small, but a good meeting point for venturing out further in the village. Nothing much to say about it, other than the voucher worked and we got our free beer!
I did wonder if maybe next time I'd book in somewhere a bit more upmarket, and of course pay the extra for it. I reckon for about 1/3 more I could have got a hotel with a nicer ambience. But you know what, if I went back to Engelberg for a ski weekend with the same group of friends I'd stay at Hotel Central again. And, at the end of the day, that's what it's all about.
