“A little outdated, but good atmosphere and service”
Reviewed March 19, 2013

I stayed at the Terrace for 3 nights in February. I travelled with a group of around 40 people.
The hotel organized everything very well for us, food was great, both breakfast and dinner.
The hotel should invest some money if possible to upgrade the rooms, but the overall atmospehere in the hotel was very nice. The service from the staff was also very nice.

We were lucky to have around 100 cm of fresh snow in combination with beautiful weather... Engelberg, we will be back.

I stayed at the Terrace hotel as part of a larger group. (Approximately 80 people) The staff at the hotel managed to efficiently deal with all requests, while still remaining friendly.
The rooms are old and in need of updating. However, they are also clean, and have fantastic views of the Titlis mountain on the other side of the vally. Although this initially had me concerned at having to carry my snowboard for long distances to get to the slopes, I soon discovered that the hotel had a system of lifts and tunnels making the trip from the hotel down to the village of Engelberg both quick and simple. In Engelberg, there is a frequent & free bus service to and from the slopes. (Alternatively, just walk, it is no more than 10 min.) Thus, we were effectively close to the slopes yet still had a stunning view of the mountain. This view is doubtlessly what keeps this hotel 'alive' The hotel itself is heavily outdated, as mentioned previously. Parts have been refurbished (relatively) recently, I hope this is part of an ongoing programme to bring the hotel up to current standards. It was probably *the* place to stay in its heyday, sadly this has long since passed...
It was a business trip, so we also used the conference/meeting room facilities. These were fine, with service and food as expected. As the rest of the hotel, the facilities were a bit run down, but passable.
I would go again, if nothing other than the fantastic view of the mountain meeting you in the morning.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view of the mountain

Here's the thing with The Terrace:

Yes, it was once a glorious luxury hotel and it is now a little .... A lot ..... tired but at the end of the day, no one ever said it was anything other than a 3 star hotel and for 2 to stay in a Swiss alpine resort for 3 nights' half board for less than £600 ... Well, I consider this a bargain.

The hotel's old private funicular has long since been decommissioned so you now access the hotel via an arrangement of bonkers "Wallace and Gromit" style tunnels and lifts (I think the tunnels are actually made of Wensledale). We received a warm welcome from the staff who were kind with my attempts at schoolgirl German. Our room wasn't ready - the check-in time is really late - 1600, I think, but there is a boot room and secure luggage store in the basement so we were able to ski the day we arrived.

Our room was large - on a corner - with magnificent views of the village and mountains. It wa tired, granted, but spotlessly clean with oodles of thoughtfully installed storage shelves. There is an endless supply of piping hot water for that vital après-ski shower and hot soup and cake is served in the lobby in the afternoon to tide you over until supper.

Supper comes in the shape of a themed buffet. Whether you are a fan of the theme or not (Swiss, Italian, Asian, etc) there is plenty from which you can choose, including a phenomenal salad bar, Swiss cheeses and a variety of good quality ice creams. Breakfast is the same - a great variety of very fresh food and a hot flask of very good coffee waiting for you at the table.

The dining room arrangements are strange in that the smallest table they have seats 6, so smaller parties need to be prepared to share. You can reserve a table for dinner in advance with reception, but the smallest one you can reserve is for 6. This makes absolutely no sense to me but ...

My tips for a happy stay would be:

Spend 5chf a day on a locker down at the gondola station so you don't have to carry your skis too far.

Bring an eye-mask if you want a lie in - the curtains are not lined.

Book a table for dinner

Arrive by train - the service is every hour and you don't need a car

Make a sandwich at breakfast to take up to the mountin with you for lunch

Room Tip: Ask for a superior non-smoking mountain view room

This hotel was a complete disappointment. We spent 5 nights at Hotel Terrace, we were ready to leave after the first night and actually considered going to a different hotel in the same town.
The hotel was treated like a playground and the staff had no control. Children were allowed to run up and down stairs and through hallways. The noise did not stop until after midnight and started again in the early hours of the morning. We asked staff multiple times to do something about the noise but nothing changed for the whole 5 nights. The restaurant service and food, were to say the least, disappointing! The rooms are extremely outdated, there is no power point in the bathroom and the t.v was the size of a ipad, We left a large letter to the manager before we left in regards to our stay and have had no reply.

Room Tip: Make sure you get a room from 3rd level or up to avoid noise.

We thought we had booked a family room and a standard room for our family of five, through Vrijuit. When we arrived, it turned out we actually had 3 standard rooms in the new area, which is not a nice part of the hotel, accommodating only 2 people each, meaning that my husband and I had to split up so one of us could be with our 10 year old. There was no way the hotel was willing or able to help us out; all rooms were taken. Our reservation clearly stated 1 family room and 1 standard room, however, the staff pointed out that we had missed some fine print on the Vrijuit website. Terrace has a contract with Vrijuit allowing them to allocate 2 standard rooms as a familyroom. I guess we could have known, but I still think this is very misleading. A family room has living space. Don't sell standard rooms as family rooms if that's not what they are. A bad start of our vacation.

Wonderful view of the Frozen Mount Titlis surrounded by light clouds and The Town of Engelberg at the foot of the mountain in evening is some thing which is an astonishing. The entry in to the hotel through a tunnel is some thing never seen before. Welcomed by hot tea served at the lobby is amazing. The hotel has fantastic Indian Food and a disc to have fun at night. Rooms are good.

The hotel is a landmark in the lovely traditional Suisse village Engelberg. Because it's situated a little higher on the mountain you have a beautiful view. Eating breakfast you see the mountains, at night we saw all the (Christmas)lights in the village. Breathtaking! And don't worry, there's a great elevator system to go up and down to the village, so you don't have to climb one step to reach the hotel. We arrived by train and walked the small distance from the station to the elevator that took us to the hotel.
With Christmas the hotel had organised a Christmasfair outside the hotel, with Gluhwein heated on an open fire, Santa Claus for the kids and all kind of snacks. We played 'hammer & nail', a game where we had to smash a nail in a huge piece of wood with the small side of the hammer. Quite a challenge and great fun!
The staff was always very helpfull, the breakfast and dinnerbuffet were varied and we met people from all over the world at the dinnertable.

Room Tip: there's a wide variety in rooms, select the one that suits you best. We had a simple basic room...
