“An "institution"”
Reviewed January 20, 2013

The café du Soleil is famous for its fondues. Personally, I find that they are good but not amazing however, I LOVE this place as do many other locals (I live very nearby). It is fabulous for after work drinks, for its fondue and also for its steak and chips or goat's cheese salad. The staff are very friendly and there is always a great atmosphere. There terrace, shaded by large trees if beautiful but you must book as it is also very popular.

The place is open for coffee and croissant in the morning (and they always have all the newspapers at the ready), for lunch (book!!) and for dinner (book!). If you don't book, you will most likely end up sitting upstairs which just lacks a bit of the atmosphere that the bustling downstairs has. Although, if you are booking for a group, the upstairs is great!

“Not worth a special trip”
Reviewed January 19, 2013

Cafe du Soleil is a great place to go a lunchtime if you work nearby, Other than that, it is nothing special and I can't see what the fuss is about. The place is always packed; they must make a mint in there. The service is efficient, don't expect to have to hang around for long, you get served promptly, which is appropriate for lunchtime but in the evening makes you feel like they want to get shot of you. If you like Steak and Chips or Fondue, that's helpful since they don't serve much else. The steak is tasty, but thin, chips are good.

“Simple and good food”
Reviewed January 12, 2013

very simple interior, no decoration, feeling of being in the big dining room of a swiss country house. Food is simple and very good. Worth trying it. We tried fondue and house wine. Both very good. Service was also excellent, quick and very kind (we wanted to scratch the pot of the fondue for the crunchy cheese, the waiter arranged that for us even if we were too ashamed to ask!) try it!

“Pleasant atmosphere and friendly service”
Reviewed January 3, 2013

It is easy to understand why this place is so successful. A simple and charming traditional interior with waiters that are friendly. There is a pleasant mix of people with locals and expats. The food if good (a fondue is not a difficult dish really) and their menu is a simple affair well executed. It is on the pricey side and we ended up paying around £50 or E60 per head. Clearly popularity and fame has driven the pricing and this place must be rather a gold mine for the owners.

“So sad; the Swiss culture is lost!”
Reviewed December 23, 2012 via mobile

The cafe du soleil is indeed a wonderful place to have a good fondue. However the influence of the international clientele of this café has turned it into an American type of restaurant. Indeed you now have exactly two hours to finish your meal and leave for the next service to start. Sorry but this is not part of the Swiss tradition; going to eat out is also the pleasure of sitting, drinking and talking until the place closes down. In the US people are used to be chased out for the next customers to come, but not in Geneva. It used to be considered as being very rude and I am sad to see that old cafés from Geneva would now adopt these fast food manners. On top of it, the manager told us that he had made us a special favor not to ask us to leave before the two hours even though the next clients had arrived! For that I will not return to the café du Soleil. Dommage as the French say.
