Cite Universitaire de Geneve
Ranked #80 of 106 Hotels in Geneva
Reviewed December 2, 2008

Cite Universitaire is a student dormitory that rents out some rooms during the school breaks. It is not a hotel or hostel as such. It is friendly, safe, clean, and cheap (for Geneve). The bathrooms and showers are communal. Some of the rooms have fabulous views of the Saleve mountain. There is a communal kitchen on each floor. There is also an on-site restaurant, but it is not cheap! The front desk has basic tourist information such as maps of the city, transit maps, telephone cards for sale, etc. There is pay internet for non-residents. Be aware that you may be staying on a floor with people who live there year-round. It is their home so be respectful. The Cite is about a 15-20 minute bus ride to the center of Geneva on Bus No. 3.

The standard of dormitory accommodation was dreadful, a corridor underground with 4 dorm rooms, ranging in size from 8 to 18 people. We stayed in dorm rooms with a group of 35 students and occupied 3 of these 4 dorm rooms. The previous year, we stayed at the youth hostel, but decided to stay further out of town this year. The dorm rooms were extremely small (the room for 18 people was about the size of a dorm for 8 people at the youth hostel), with extremely limited bathroom facilities - 4 toilets and 4 showers for 50 people. There was no space for any storage of any sort, apart from some very small lockers. The mattresses were very thin and also some were very dirty.

During the days that we were there, more young people arrived and there were insufficient beds in the dormitories for the people who were booked in, so the management decided to put two beds in the corridor - leaving hardly any room to walk by, causing probably a fire hazard.

Despite us clearly letting the management know that we were a party of 16-18 year olds with teachers, the teachers were unable to gain access to the dormitory areas after 11 pm, as the door to the corridor was locked by staff and staff did not initially have a key. One member of staff was roomed in a different building so could not even access the same building!
