“Great location and staff...but could use a bit of touching up”
Reviewed November 18, 2012

It's hard to get a better location than this hotel, if you're looking to be near the trains/buses, restaurants, etc. It's very practical. Also, the staff are very pleasant, helpful, and accommodating. Breakfast is fine and I'm told by a friend who lives in Geneva that the restaurant is good for dinner. It could use some touching up and attention to details in the room. The lighting is terrible. It's like you're in a restaurant with dim lighting...great for a romantic night out, terrible if you want to read or get some work done. The room is a bit cramped and it was warm and stuffy, even though I don't think the heat was on...had to have the window open in November. However, nice linens - it's a mixed bag. Main problem was the lighting.

Very friendly staff. Great location next to Gare Cornavin and transport links.
Good food in restaurant. Try the beef bourgignon and the pizzas
Breakfast a bit basic. Ask for a room with a view of Mont Blanc and the lake
Not really 4 stars though. We had a room at the very top which has a convenient kitchenette.

Room Tip: Ask for high floor with view onto lake and Mont Blanc (station side)

it is the nearest hotel from the train station. facade looks appealing with a cute restaurant and cafe. lobby was appealing nice too. staff was nice, although we encountered some communication problems. the taxi that we requested the night before never came. probably some misunderstanding with the date /time of pick up.

the room we had was on the fifth floor, elevator only goes up to the fourth. Good thing there was someone to assist with our luggage. the studio was large, beds were comfortable. two things i didnt really like were, first the airconditioning wasnt working, so we had to open the windows, but then we could hear the noise from the train station/ rail road tracks. second, the bathtub was way too high, even with the foot stool. i almost slipped as i was trying to get in the tub. not safe for small children.

Booked this hotel as it was near the central train station for my early start the next day. Room was small, window did not have shutters or curtains, fortunately it faced north and was small. Did not hear the trains as other reviewers have reported but I was on the side furthest away from the train station. Due to its proximity to train station there are a few unsavoury characters about, I was not troubled but may need to be considered for families or females alone. Restuarant was of acceptable standard, buffet breakfast adequate if unexciting.
Would I stay there again, yes if I was just passing through. For longer stays look elsewhere.

Room Tip: Try to get a room on the north side and not the top floor

I had booked this room for a business trip in Geneva, and it definitely is not a 4 star hotel. It is right next to the train station, and I could hear the train all night. The area is not very nice, no where near anything half decent. The breakfast buffet was so overpriced and terrible as well.

The only upside to this hotel was how massive the room was.

I stayed at the Montbrillant for two nights in July 2012 and had a somewhat mixed experience. First the good things: when I arrived in the early morning, the hotel had a room already available for me so that I could shower and dress for meetings. When the first room I was assigned was not satisfactory - located on the premier etage with a direct view of the train platforms of the station - the front desk person immediately gave me a room on a higher floor not facing the station. The room I had (in the "Studio" section of the hotel - more on that later) was very clean with comfortable bedding, adequate air-conditioning, a small kitchenette, and quiet for sleeping, despite the hotel's location right next to the train station. The Montbrillant's location is excellent for taking advantage of Geneva's public transit - you are given a free transit card and you are centrally located for trams and buses. The hotel breakfasts (included) are good - the typical European buffet of cold meats, cheeses, yogurt, etc. The bread was delicious and the coffee strong enough. The restaurant, where I had dinner one night, was also more than adequate with friendly service and a wide-ranging menu.
Now the negatives - to enter the "Studio" apartment section of the hotel, one must walk out the front door, past the restaurant, and into a dark alley behind the hotel. One enters with a keycard and the hallway lights up on entry. In the two days I was in and out of that entrance, I never saw another person either enter or leave. For a woman travelling alone, it's not a fun experience. When traveling alone on business, I stay in small hotels so that there is someone who sees me going in and out and greets me. I know Geneva is one of the world's safest cities, but it's still an un-nerving experience late at night to have to enter one's room off a grafitti-decorated alley next to the trash bins. When I mentioned this to the blonde woman at the hotel desk on my first evening - she told me it was MY problem and just MY perception. So much for friendly service!
One tip - when arriving in Geneva, if you're staying at the Montbrillant, take the train from the airport - it's only 6 minutes and MUCH cheaper than a taxi (43 CHF). The train platform for the airport train is literally steps from the Montbrillant - it was the platform I could see directly on to from my window from the first room I was assigned.

Room Tip: I didn't see the regular rooms, just two in the Studio section which were quite nice. Ask for a...
