“So much space”
Reviewed September 13, 2011

The first (and only) challenge is to find the hotel's entrance. The reception is on the 6th floor of a town house and accessible by elevator. Once one has reached there everything else is easy.

We were traveling in 3 with our 3-year old daughter and had booked an apartment. What we got was an enormous piece of flat complete with balcony overlooking Geneva. We had 2 bedrooms (1 double, 1 twin) a huge living room, a dining room with an adjacent fully-equipped kitchen plus one shower/bathroom. We also had TVs in all rooms, which in a busy town can be nice if one wants to wind down or if the kids want to watch a cartoon.

Breakfast is delivered to the room at the chosen time. Thereafter, take the elevator down to the ground floor and you are smack in Geneva's main shopping street.

Later, on the way back, there is the restaurant just around the corner that is the perfect spot for the final night cap.

We had a great time in Geneva and recommend Hotel Central without any reservation.

Room Tip: Book an apartment. It is excellent value for money in a generally very expensive town.

Sure, we all agree that the rooms are small and that the toilet and shower are tiny and immediately present themselves to you as you enter your room -- but does that really matter?! The location is perfect -- right in the heart of the historic district -- and a short walk to the lake. If you haven't traveled with earplugs before, then this isn't the place for you -- go book yourself into the Four Seasons. But if you are on a budget and don't need much more than a comfortable bed, a WC in your room, a great balcony, and breakfast served to your door at the hour you decide, then THIS IS YOUR PLACE!
And furthermore, I would hardly equate Hotel Central with a backpackers hostel. It is a legitimate, clean, and respectable hotel with most excellent customer service. The staff and owners will do anything they can to make sure that you are comfortable. We liked it so much we stayed there both times when passing through Geneva and look forward to the next time we are lucky enough to pass through the city.

We checked into the hotel late at night and collected the room key. We opened the door to Room#15 only to find a roll of toilet paper welcoming us. It was the WC....!!!
Disgusting....!!!!

I have just returned from travelling around Europe and noticed that the review I made about Hotel Central has not processed. Here is goes again!

Brilliant stay in Geneva in this lovely family owned hotel. It is very well situated, just inside the boundary of the old city, but not at all far away from the main shopping streets. It is also just a short walk from the lake. The couple that owns the hotel were charming and extremely helpful. They pointed out the city’s attractions, offered to arrange travel cards for us and provided some general useful hints and tips about the city. They speak fluent French and English.

Our room was perfect. I was travelling with a friend and after sharing a few…intimate nights with him in some hostel rooms, to be given a bunk bed was fantastic. The room suited its purpose. It’s not as if you go to a city like Geneva and sit in your hotel room all day. It had a T.V, a wardrobe, a balcony, a desk and a shower and sink. To our surprise, the owners said it was their smallest room!

It boasts a really good, cosy, family atmosphere and it is the little touches that make the hotel better than expected. For example, the hotel entrance is off the street and thus makes it very safe, there is an array of films that you can rent from the reception (if you do somehow get bored!), breakfast is served to you in your room (and offered for free so no hidden additional charges), there was a proper shutter for the windows which when closed, kept the room cool during the day and the shower in the room was very good – a proper tiled one with good pressure as opposed to a flimsy plastic one that rains on you. A rare joy was that the mattress was really comfortable- it sounds silly to say but when you are backpacking around Europe on a budget, you start to crave a comfortable bed!
In short, the hotel suited us perfectly. We did not want a chain hotel that felt corporate and sterile- if you do, then do not come here. If you want a friendly and welcoming atmosphere with helpful staff, then this hotel is the place for you. It is reasonably priced (hard to come by in Geneva) and is a refreshing change from the 5 star palaces that hog the streets on the other side of the lake. I do not know why people would stay over there when you have a place like Hotel Central, which is situated in the nicest part of Geneva and are, forgive the irony, very central!

I take issue with a lot of the excessively negative reviews. Two things get mentioned a lot. That the rooms are small and it is noisy. I contend this with simple common sense. Bear in mind the star rating of Hotel central and the fact it is situated in the old city. Anywhere central will obviously be smaller and noisier than further out. Let’s also not exaggerate, it is not situated in a clubbing district. You are not going to be subjected to sleeping in a wardrobe with heavy bass music surrounding you. The type of noise people are referring to is people chatting from street level- bear in mind that I stayed during the peak summer period and didn’t struggle to sleep. Also, the hotel rooms are on the fourth and fifth floor- it is not as if people are shouting through your bedroom window.

I simply do not think it is fair to give any hotel a low overall star rating because of noise coming from the street etc.- these are obviously issues that the hotel cannot control. The service given by the staff/owners far exceeds what one can expect from a 2 star hotel. Other complaints such as there being no breakfast room or lounge are superficial- you don't go on holiday to sit in the hotel. As I have already stated, if you want to sit in vacuum, in an unnecessarily large room and avoid as much of Geneva as possible, then spend hundreds of franks more and go to the other side of the lake.

This was one of the cheapest hotels we could find in central Geneva. The location is superb but in any other city thios hotel would have been far too expensive. There was no air con in our room so it became unbearably stuffy at night. Breakfast was on the meagre side. The room was clean and staff were friendly so no major complaints as we were only there for 2 nights.

First of all the price, was very high, in my opinion, more than in Paris, for example.
Secondly, the hotel does not occupy the entire building, only the 6-th floor.
It is strange, I have never seen something like that before. It is situated in the very centre, and the view is excelent.
Reception only between 7 am and 9 pm. No restaurant, no dinning room, no, lobby. The breakfast was brought in the room. A cofee, bread, a small glas of juice,a croissant, one piece of butter and some jam daily. The room was big but the bathroom was small.
On the other hand, the staffl was friendly as they supplied us with information every time we needed it(they gave us maps, indications regarding the train&bus schedule, the shops where products where good value for money, etc.).
To put it in a nutshell, we enjoyed the stay, despite the fact that the price was a little bit on the high side.

With Geneva hotel capacity frequently overbooked I ended up staying in this hotel. It is certainly central. The hotel is run from what looks like two converted apartments. Rooms are super tiny, feel cheap but have a balcony. Service is friendly but quirky. Room rates at CHF140 per night including breakfast feel overpriced. The big upside is its location, 5 minutes walk to the waterfront. The rooms are very noisy too and one feels very quickly claustrophobic..
