“Alright but I'd recommend Manotel Kipling over the road”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 23, 2011

We didn't actually book a room here but as Hotel Kipling (where we'd stayed at the beginning of our trip two weeks before) was over booked we were offered a free upgrade to this hotel that still had rooms available.

Waiting at reception (which was quite a while whenever we went to reception actually) we could see the room tariffs which suggested the cheapest room was 500 CHF a night and we thought brilliant we're on to a winner. Assuming the room would be amazing compared to other places we had stayed for much less money. The staff were accommodating given the website problem and let us check in despite us arriving before check in time (we were planning on dumping our luggage and wandering aimlessly around Geneva until check in time), the reception lady managed to find a room that was ready and let us go straight up which was nice.

We didn't take them up on the offer of the 30CHF breakfast because I'd expect to eat my own body weight in food for that much money and it was simple cereals and croissants as far as we could tell.

We got to our room and thought, "oh, ok". There was nothing wrong with it at all and I'm sure we were given one of the most standard rooms that hadn't been refurbished considering we were a last minute arrangement and hadn't paid for 4 star. I can't believe anyone would pay 500 CHF a night for a room like that. It was perfectly fine but not near as good as the fantastic room we had in Hotel Kipling, a 3 star hotel across the road where we'd had a balcony and no traffic noise and paid only 115 CHF. For this price I'd stay on one of the swanky looking hotels on the lake if I were you.

It's probably about to be refurbished I expect but I can't imagine anyone has ever paid 500 for that room, or i hope not. It was fine but the bathroom was quite small and old fashioned and the decor a little out of date.

I wouldn't stay here again because it will always be out of our price range but it's a perfectly nice hotel if you can afford it.

Stayed at this hotel for four days never again. My advice is dont eat here the breakfast is the worst I ve had in a four star.. horrible. The mangos served at breakfast were literally black and tasted off and the bacon was charred to black cinders.. inedible. I could not peacefully relax whilst eating breakfast as there was about 8 staff running frantically and unnecessarily around the restaurant and obsessively opening the metal food holders, at one point the older woman in charge started yelling at the younger female employee it was awful. Sadly you get charged an extortionate fee for this displeasure.
When we arrived the bath tube had not been cleaned properly and there was soap residue around the plug hole and sides..gross. The worst part is that the double bed is two single matresses shoved together just like in a cheap motel! there is no matress cover so you sleep on the seams of the matress making the beds are very uncomfortable for a couple.
The very young hotel manager, she apologised but didnt really seem to genuinely care and wanted rid of our complaints. The whole hotel is very unpolished and could be run so much better.

The Good:
1. 5 minute walk from train station where you can get trams and trains
2. Free travel card for trains and trams
3. Recently renovated rooms are nice
4. Chocolate on your pillow
5. They change $ for you at the front desk
6. This doesn't have to do with the hotel but Cafe du Soleil is amazing for fondue! Take the 3 tram there.
7. Supermarket across the street for snacks and cheap water
8. Free internet and free printing in the lobby
9. Decent hotel restaurant, with 15% off coupon

The Not so Good:
1. It is Geneva so it is EXPENSIVE!
2. Had no hot water one day, they said the whole building didn't have hot water
3. Area around train station is sketchy, but unless you stay right on the lake I don't know a better area
4. EXPENSIVE!

I stayed for work and my overall impression of Geneva was that I probably don't want to go back. For such an expensive city you'd think it would be a little cleaner but it was pretty dirty (even for a city) and lots of sketchy areas.

Hotel Royal is a great hotel for the price, not only considering the cost of accommodation in Geneva, but also the distance to the beautiful lake and of course the train and tram station (a 5 minute walk). We stayed in an Executive room for two nights. I would highly recommend this type of room (it's the one with the red cushions and velvet drapes in the official photos), as it was spacious, stylish and functional. The Nespresso machine certainly didn't cause any harm. We stayed on the third floor and didn't experience any problems with noise, which is usually my main problem whilst staying at hotels.

The staff were friendly and welcoming. Unfortunately we did not experience the hotel's food, however we did receive a 15% voucher for three Manotel restaurants, which led us to the nearby Restaurant Edelweiss (please see my separate review). We wouldn't have known about this gem of a restaurant had they not, so it was a great way for Manotel to promote their other hotels/restaurants as well as giving guests options based on their tastes. The other freebie was a local transport card, which you will receive from any hotel in Geneva to last the duration of your stay. The tram is great for getting to places like the UN Headquarters and CERN.

The lake was definitely one of the highlights of my trip and you don't need to have a lake view room to appreciate it, so if you would rather not spend extra to have one, Hotel Royal would be a great choice.

Plus: good location, close to bus station and railway station (one main reason we chose the hotel), walk distance to the lake. The Quadruple room is very practical for family with kids, as it is indeed 2 adjacent double rooms.

Minues: might be noisy for light sleepers. a little outdated, not really 4.5 star, expensive breakfast,

Room Tip: Ask a quadruple room if travelling with kids

Try and request a corner room if staying in this hotel. The standard rooms are very small, outdated and very very small. The corner rooms are very nice and updated. The hotel is average but good value for Geneva (which is stupidly expensive). Overall a 3 star hotel or possibly a 4 star boutique hotel.
