After reading all the positive reviews on tripadvisor, my husband and I and our 3-year old daughter decided to stay in this hotel for 4 nights.
Yes, we all agree that the location is great, in the center of the nice City, Thun, and on the banks of the river with beautiful views.

What we don't understand is why this is a 4-stars hotel.

The room:

The room was very basic and far too small for 3 people, even for two people!
The bathroom looked modern, but there was NO storage space at all. We had to put everything on the ground.
The wardrobe, oh dear, I can't even call it a wardrobe, was far too small. I wonder where people have to hang their clothes during winter time?

Then, during the evening, there were lots of insects on the windows, so it was impossible to leave the windows open. There is NO AIRCONDITIONING, which made it difficult to breath in that room. It wasn't even hot outside during the day (average 22C), but it was too hot to catch some sleep. If we would leave the windows open, there would be an invasion of flying insects. Since we had a room on the first floor with no view at all, it felt like being in a bunker.

There was an extra very small bed in our room for our little daughter. After cleaning the room, this bed was never made.

STAFF and Breakfast/dinner:

When we arrived, none of the staff would offer help to carry luggage.

At breakfast, we were not offered any coffee or tea, instead they told us in a very rude way: "You will find everything inside". There you go...By the way, breakfast was very basic.

In general we found the staff not friendly, except the waiters in the restaurant who served dinner.

If you want to use internet in your room, you will have to pay for it. Well, we did, but internet was not working during our stay. There were problems with their provider and this was not sorted out. Luckily, we did get our money refunded.

We are used to stay in 4 and 5-star deluxe hotels. After Thun, we stayed in Swiss Diamond Hotel in Lugano. This is a 5-star deluxe hotel. I don't know if it is wise to compare these two hotels, but this would make the Freienhof a 3-star hotel.

I'm sorry, but I can't recommend this hotel to families with children. We think this is more the kind of hotel for business/conferences.

Had read TripAdvisor reviews prior to travelling, most of which were complimentary. Couldn't fault the hotel at all, service, food, rooms. You can dine outside by the river if you wish. We have stayed in many parts of Switzerland over the past few years, and the situation of this hotel right on the River Aare was exceptional. Much to see and do in the area - Thun castle overlooking the town, boat trip on Lake Thun. Lovely food served on the boat, not expensive. (Be warned, if you disembark the boat to visit the Beatus caves, there is a really steep 25 minute walk but it's worth the effort).

We stayed for 2 nights in july. Very hot and humid so found it difficuly to sleep with no air con in the rooms. Great position on the river, lovely walks along the river banks. Great restaurant on the opposite bank serving italian food. Go out hotel entrance turn right cross over bridge and you are there, has a good terrace above river. A good location to drive into the mountains without the hustle of Interlaken.

The Freienhof is recently refurbished and bang in the middle of the historic old town of Thun, at the River Aare. Rooms are no frills and very small, furniture also won't win them a design price but it's good value for money, it's got a decent restaurant, it's quiet (unlike the other hotels in the city center) and they have underground car parking. Ask for a room in the annex, facing the river and ask for special rates at check in.

Very chic boutique like hotel for such as small Swiss town. It's centrally located in old town and just a five minute walk to the train station. It's located on a penisula between two rivers so it's very quiet with little traffic passing around the rooms(either pedestrian or vehicular). Rooms are not tiny, but wouldn't consider them roomy either. Beautiful hard wood floors. Acutal queen beds, instead of two twins pushed together, that is comfortable. A shelf on wheels lays over the foot of the bed and holds the flat screen tv and coffee maker(guess it's on wheel so you can move it when you sleep). Lighting in the room is hidden in the trim in the ceiling, nice modern touch. Room has two sets of floor to cieling windows, one side opens up to create a balcony like space with great views of an old wooden covered bridge/dam. Bathrooms are very interesting. Instead of being behind a wall, the bathroom in encased in a cloudy glass stucture that you can see through from the bedroom, so make sure your very comfortable with whomever your staying with, because you will be seeing them naked, or at least their silhouette. Bathroom also has an orange, almost neon like, light that can be seen in the bedroom when turned on. Minor problem if you get up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom or wake up early and decide to shower because the light protrudes brightly into the bedroom and can wake the other person. The shower is awesome with a huge shower head on the ceiling pumping out tons of water. No mini bar was a bit of a shock in such a nice hotel. Room numbers are painted on the ceiling of the hallways which was something a little original. Keys(no card, acual keys) to room have large and bulky key chains but I encountered this in two other swiss hotels.
Breakfast provided few options beyond a few cereals, cheeses, cold cuts and juice, but they let us take bread to feed the ducks and swans who live on the two rivers surrounding the hotel. The hotel restaurant had great modern Swiss food served in an upscale yet casual dining area. The perch on saffron laced spinach was particullary good and the steaks(very good) are cooked in the kitchen than flamed with cognac table side(nice show manship).
Staff was very nice but failed on our only attempt to get a recommendation for a place to grab lunch. Not a big deal, she was polite just not knowledgeable.
Thun is a beautiful little town and deserves a visit even if for only a couple of hours, if staying overnight I'd highly recommend this hotel.

This hotel is actually in Thun(pronounced "toon") not Interlaken(on completely opposite side of lake) and is very chic boutique like for such as small Swiss town.
