The barengraben is a fenced in area next to a tram stop and across the bridge from the Olde Town. It's a good spot for people who want to see brown bears at a close but safe distance in a fairly small area, but on two separate visits I have to say that I felt bad for the bears. Their area is surrounded by a wall where people can look down on them and take pictures. The bears have a small pond and some climbing stones and tree trunks and caves that they can escape into. Overall, I felt bad for the bears. It's a pity that Bern's namesake creatures are put on display in this way.

and a lot of fun, they feed them in the morning in the old bear pit, and the three bears then wander the park on the hill by the river, in the glass enclosed section plenty of photo ops for bears up close.

This riverside park is a beautiful place for the bears to reside. They have an amazing view and must be very content with it all. Unfortunately we have visited twice and only seen one bear for a very short time! It was quite a warm day so perhaps they were under cover to keep cool.

We went the the bear park on a very sunny day,we found the bears very entertaining they were on the move most of the time wander up and down their fairly large enclosure they seemed comfortable in their environment and quite happy. We took lots of pictures. Well worth a visit. Don't eat in the restaurant across the road.

I found this kind of amazing. It's basically a small, enclosed, park located right along the river that has live bears. You can go and watch them do bear things, buy bear related memorabilia, pretend you're a bear yourself, whatever strikes your fancy and everything but the memorabilia is free. It's in a beautiful setting and, to me at least, it didn't come across as sad (this coming from a vegetarian and someone who cares about how we treat animals in general) and it's kind of a cool connection to the history of Bern as well. Please note however, keep a tight grip on glasses/hats/cameras etc because if they drop into the bear enclosure you can kiss them goodbye.
