Owner description: The Bernisches Historisches Museum is one of the most important museums of cultural history in Switzerland. The collections of archaeology, history and ethnography include approximately 500,000 objects dating from the Stone Age to the present and representing cultures from all over the world. The hydria from Graechwil, the Burgundian tapestries, the diptych from Königsfelden and a series of ethnographical objects as well as coins and medals are all internationally renowned. Besides these, other highlights of the permanent exhibitions include the spectacular Bernese sculptures, two Bernese mayoral thrones and much more. The integrated Einstein Museum offers an account of the life and work of the physicist and places it in a fascinating manner in the context of world history. Temporary exhibitions are regularly staged in the generously proportioned exhibition hall.

Spent a few hours here, learned a lot about Bern and Switzerland, great displays, and plenty of space to cover everything from the earliest times to the present. Free with the Swiss Pass, aside from temporary exhibits.

The tickets were chf 18 and chf 21 for the Einstein museum (not Einsteins house which is separate and in the city) and it was really great! Worth the $$. Unfortunately my friend and I came in the afternoon and were not able to see most of it, so if you like to read and see every corner of a museum, take your time, come in early if possible when they open up, then take a break and continue... So for Bern (the capital) you definitely need at least two days, one for the museum, and another to walk the city and get to know the place. Btw... the art museum is right next door to the historical one. Enjoy!

This is a world class museum, with a great deal to see. The bronze age and celtic collections are excellent as are the superbly delicate textiles. You pay extra to got to the Einstein exhibit, but if you go to the very top floor of the main museum and then down the spiral staircase you find yourself in Einstein exhibit anyway and can enjoy the wonderful infinity mirrored staicase for free.

My only criticism is that most of the rooms are very dark. I understand that this is necessary for the presevation of delicate displays, but not all rooms need to be the same sombre shade and the overall effect is eventually over whelmingly soporific.

This museum houses a wealth of histories from local, Norman, encryption, religious artifacts and histories. As well as the exceptional einstein museum. Discounts for groups and students/concessions. There is a bistro and toilets on site. Highly recommended. It is also the second largest historic museum, CHF 13 for permanent exhibition, CHF 18 for Einstein Museum
