Hotel is in a great position close to all the inner city shops.and attractions. Rooms are typically Swiss - compact but everything works, my only critiicism is that the bathrooms are a little too small, other than that, this would be a good chioice if you want a cental hotel.

Rooms are reasonably sized (Americans, beware that European hotel rooms are smaller than in the US). Loved the wood floor (don't like carpets). Kindly, the hotel offered me a discounted price for a relatively long stay in a double room for single occupancy. Staff go the extra mile: a Sunday I turned in a blouse for washing and ironing at noon; when I was back at 4:30pm the shirt was hanging in my room, so I could wear it the next day.
The hotel is very centrally located. Many restaurants are on the pedestrian area in front of the hotel, which is lovely and practical. I read about other guests being bothered by the noise. Personally, once I closed the windows I could not hear anything anymore. However, if you are concerned about noise, ask a room in the back of the hotel (quiet side).
wi-fi is free! (not always the case in Switzerland)

Herr Troxler is the helpful and friendly manager, always responsive to our requests. The hotel was remodeled sometime in the recent past and the decor shows careful attention to detail.

However, although the room appeared quite clean and pleasant, the bathroom was a problem. The plumbing was perfect, of course, but...the bathroom was accessed via a sliding door and the whole affair resembled nothing quite so much as an ample clothes closet. About the same amount of space and with the same level of privacy...none.

The room opened onto an interior space facing other rooms, so visual privacy was quite limited. There was a surfeit of noise whenever the restaurant or bar had patrons. We were on the 3d floor, but it sounded as if were actually in the bar, itself. This noise abated about 2am or so when the patrons went home. But the bells of the adjacent church were always on the job, tolling the hour and each quarter hour, throughout the day...and throughout the night.

In summary, the only problem with this hotel is noise and lack of privacy. But, for us, it was a significant problem...and one which the hotel staff can do nothing about.

The breakfast is ample and of very good quality.

The hotel is located within the old town and everything touristic is within easy walking distance.

Even with the windows closed, noise from the restaurants/bars across the street made it difficult to sleep. With the windows open in warm weather, it would be impossible. Ask for a room that does not face the street. Our room had one of the pod-style bathrooms - functional but not comfortable. Felt like we were using a port-a-potty.

My adult son and I stayed one night. Our choice (helped by the tourist info office at train station) was dictated by price and location - of course nothing Bern is cheap - this was good value. Personnel at desk and breakfast left a bit to be desired, but nothing solid to object to. Room was fine IF you are traveling with someone with whom you are extremely familiar - the podlike bathroom, perched at the edge of the bed, leaves nothing to the imagination, every rustle of toilet paper (I could be a great deal more descriptive but that's enough) clearly and intrusively audible. This would not be a problem for everyone - just be aware.
Breakfast not the best I had in Switzerland but adequate.

We chose this hotel as we wanted to be quite central and as it was winter we wanted to be sure we could walk while not getting wet or snowed on. For those who have never been to Bern, all the roads of the old town are flanked by arcades, which means that people are always covered. As it was around Christmas, the atmosphere was magic, as every 200 meters there was some kind of Christmas music that mixed with the lights and Xmas decorations of the shops and with the smell of hot chesnuts. We almost forgot to notice that all the small pine-trees along the 1st floor external walls were REAL treas with lights !

We opted for a superior room and registration was quick and efficient. Initially we struggled a bit with the use of the lift as it will only operate when using the magnetic key to the room. However, one gets used to this very quickly and as the lift is very near the exit then this system meant that people could not just come off the street and use the lift... We did not see a lounge or sitting area, unless one considers this to be the area across reception, with the desk with a computer that offers free internet. This little corner (literally) is nicely organised, but in full view of all passers by as the wall-window is ground to ceiling. To have internet as an option in the room would be an extra.

We found the room to be modern, light, airy, clean, with good lighting and nice wooden floors. The shower-room was on the small side and there could have been some toiletteries. Not only, but to our amazement and surprise the liquid soap that was in the bathroom was a "Küchen-Handseife, gegen Gerüche, effektiv gegen Fisch-Zwiebel-& Knoblauchgeruch"... which means it was a... kitchen soap, against smells, effective against the smell of fish, onions and garlic !!!! I hope that the photo can be uploaded, as this is a howler!

Breakfast: a definitiv no-no and not worth to base the decision to stay here because the price includes a buffet-breakfast. To be honest, this was one of our criteria regards the choice of hotel. This hotel has a restaurant and the breakfast is organised here by taking a number of tables and seats out (which are stacked towards the back wall).

Now about breakfast: we came in at about 9:45 and the (only) lady there immediately looked on her watch. There were only two types of bread, there was a pot of coffee sitting on a heating tray (since 8:30?), no hot water for tea bags, a very poor selection of meats and cheese. Two (maybe three) type of cereals were sitting in plastic containers, but the choice was really minimal. While there were egg-cups there were no eggs, so we asked. The lady again looked on her watch and with a sigh then took out a small electric boiler and put in the eggs, which meant that we would be getting hot eggs, which is actually lovely. But there was nowhere information that this option was available.

One or two minutes after 10h00 the lady asked if we still wanted something and then started taking everything away, dismantled the tables and started bringing in all the chairs from the back. We got the message that they needed the space and that it was time to leave. The other table and we left.

Transport: Walking time from the train-station: ±15 minutes. Bus 10 (from the train station) stops just a few minutes from the hotel and provides a convenient mode of transport. There is a lovely pastry shop (at the bus-stop) and worth considering having breakfast here.

Details like the kitchen soap in the bathroom and the breakfast 'buffet' and 'service' give this hotel a tacky feeling while the rooms are actually nice. It really is a pity.

Sightseeing: The hotel is in the Rathausgasse, which means the town hall lane, worth to walk by. Coming out of the hotel and taking to the left, one finds nice bohemian shops and at the end a church and other beautiful building. This is definitively worth a visit, and through a small 'alley' one is on a major road with a tram that also goes to the train station.

Bern: definitively worth a stop-over.

Room Tip: While the Rathausgasse is not a busy road, we opted to an inner room which looked out onto roofs and...

Stayed here for 2 nights in mid October 2011. Overall, we were very happy with this hotel.

Location: Very central in old town Bern. Great spot from which to explore. About 10 minute walk from the central train station. Trams and buses are available within a block or two to take you just about anywhere in the city.

Room: Very nicely designed with a modern design theme. Room itself was a bit on the small side, but perfectly functional for 2 people for a couple of nights. Ensuite bathroom was built into a cubicle that looks like it was previously a closet. Functional for a couple of nights, but you better be pretty comfortable with your travel partner. Bed was on the hard side and didn't offer the best 2 nights of sleep. Room was quiet - we had a room on an interior courtyard which minimized street noise.

Amenities: Limited (no free wi-fi, no in room mini bar), but we knew that when booking this place. The included breakfast was ok for me. It had very limited gluten-free selections for my partner (coffee, an apple and cheese was it).

Staff: Reception was very helpful making a reservation at Pizzeria da Bucolo one night (and you don't seem to be able to get a table there without a reservation). Generally everyone was pleasant and helpful.

Value: Bern, like most of Switzerland, is expensive. This hotel was at the higher end for us on our trip. Would like to have seen a few more amenities for the price.
