Great spot for photos and a wonderfull view of the city! It's quite a hike up though... wear comfy shoes and bring a bottle of water!

“Worth the climb”
Reviewed February 13, 2013

My husband and I were walking around the old town on a Sunday morning looking for a nice place for brunch. We thought we had chosen a brew pub restaurant opposite the bear pits but decided we would walk a bit more and come back. We wandered over to the rose garden area and decided that since it was a fairly steep climb to the top it would be prudent to walk up to the gardens before the sun was too hot and on an empty stomach rather than a full one. Spied the restaurant at the top and was very pleasantly surprised. I hadn't expected such a nice cafe in a popular tourist area as I unfortunately assume that businesses don't usually try their best when they have a captive market.

It was a gorgeous day and we were able to get a lovely table on the covered terrace and enjoyed a delicious lunch and the exceptional view of the city. We both had excellent entrees - my husband had a chicken caesar with lots of perfectly grilled chicken and a flavorful dressing and I had the gravlax plate. Very good sized portions. Good service. Spotless bathrooms. With drinks and coffee about $54 Canadian. Most restaurants include the tip, but you'll know if you are expected to leave something if the server points out the option as you process your credit card. 10% seems to be customary. We didn't have reservations and arrived around 11:30 - 12:00 ish and were able to get a table, but it filled up pretty quickly after that.

“Second best view on the Altstadt”
Reviewed January 13, 2013

Especially at night when the lights in the Altstadt are on and even better just after a snowfall. Make sure you reserve a table in the restaurant at the window!

“Whether tourist or local, the Rosengarten does not disappoint”
Reviewed January 11, 2013

There are many ways to enjoy this spot: From its high perch across the Aare river from Bern's old city, perhaps the best view of this medieval hamlet [particularly at sunset] is from the Rosengarten. In the summer, you can stroll among the roses and statuary or enjoy a drink on the terrasse, while children scramble across the adjacent playground. Although we often take out of town guests here to ooh and ahh at the city and river below, don't mistake this place for some well-sited tourist trap: The service is quite good and the food is reliably delicious. If you're just visiting Bern, the Rosengarten is a must-see and if you live here, you'll return many times.
