“Top spot to stay, great facilities, easy to reach city (5kms away).”
Reviewed April 2, 2011

We stayed 30th March 2011 after reading good reviews. Very impressed. Everyone gets a free visit into BernAqua for swimming, spa and sauna, at no charge, (except to pay for spa treatments); an excellent and fun place for relaxation. The pool complex is 2 minutes walk through the Westside shopping centre, which is attached to the hotel. Shopping is excellent and varied in there, with plenty of eating places and a supermarket . Outside the hotel door is a tram stop, trams take 20 minutes down into Bern City centre and go about every 10/12 minutes. Trains get there quicker, from the station right by the hotel, for about the same fare, 4 CHF each way. The hotel is in a lovely, quiet spot, with no noise from the motorway, which is just about 500metres away, and hidden away out of earshot. The motorway Junction is number 32 and easy to find. Parking; very reasonable rates; you can now park 100 m from the hotel, outside, next to the Shell garage, for 3 CHF for up to 11 hours, then 1 CHF per hour after that, or down in the underground car park under the hotel and shops for the same price. It doesn't matter where you park underground, though the hotel does have 42 spaces set aside for its guests, if you follow the "hotel" sign driving in to the car park, but all spaces are the same price. If you really want to save money, drive out of the car park within a few hours of arrival, and park again, and you will never pay more than 3 CHF. The rooms were very modern, clean and comfortable, free cookies on arrival at reception are lovely. If you think you may want breakfast, pay for it in the room rate in advance, as it always costs a lot more to pay for it at the hotel on the day. They have hot and cold buffet food at breakfast. Outside the hotel there is often a lovely smell - of warm chocolate from the Toblerone factory along the road!

It was quite a good surprise. The brand Holiday Inn does not recall something as good as this. The hotel is brand new, everything works, the rooms are spacious and comfortable. The high points are: 1. The shopping mall linked to it with good stores and several good restaurants, 2. The train station right in front and 3. The water park. Amazing place!

This is a review that is hopefully complete as far as our experiences go at the Holiday Inn Westside in Bern. Might be informative for you travellers out there. And no, I am not a Hotel-tester, I am just a regular guy, but I was so impressed that I had to write this, my first review on any Hotel, ever.

So here it goes:

1). Arrival: If you come by car, no worries, the Hotel is attached to a superb shopping-mall with plenty of parking. BUT: Better yet, come by train. Even though the Hotel is not in the City Center, the S5 or S51 will connect to it every 30 minutes to at max hourly from the Central Railway Station in Bern and those trains leave from the same set of tracks as all arriving major trains from outside Bern, i.e. from Zurich, Basel etc.

Just look for trains that list Bruennen-Westside on the board to find your specific choice. The ride takes only 6 minutes and is well worth waiting for. If you are outside the station and don't want the long walk to the tracks, just hop on Tram Number 8 which has as its last stop the Westside shopping mall. Either way, you exit train or tram and the Hotel is right in front of you, takes 30 seconds to walk to the front-desk. If you are on business and have a better half, this is THE spot to leave her/him/it and have you business-meeting the next day. Read on to find out why.....(smile).....

2).Check-in: Couldn't have been better, friendlier and faster. They speak all major languages i.e. english, german, french, italian and of course my all-time favority: Swiss-German (NOT...LOL) Staff is absolutely charming and easy-going.

3). Rooms: Super-clean, very spacious, even for just their basic room, superb bed with superb mattress, excellent bathroom with black-slate floor and large walk-in shower, Superb shower-head and excellent water-pressure make for happy and clean guests.
The bathroom was so clean, there wasn't even dust or dirty or grime underneath the
sinks, which is always a pet-peeve of mine to check.

4). Security: Elevators only accesible by key-card, i.e. excellent.

5). Prices of odds and ends: Cup of coffee in the front-desk attached coffee-bar was CHF 3.80 which is less than I pay in Basel in a regular cafe'. 2 choices of breakfast are available; A). A cup of coffee with a croissant/gipfel for 6chf or a full-on, everything you want including scrambled eggs, sausages etc. american break-fast buffet for only 20chf.
That'll cost me 30-45 chf in Basel or Zurich easily in such a nice hotel.

6). No info on the restaurant in the Hotel, but no need either. You walk outside through
the sliding glass doors next to the front-desk and you are right inside the mall. This is one clean, modern, non-linear layed out gem of a mall. Right across (45 degrees to the right) from the hotel lobby doors is one of the best Thai-restaurants I have ever eaten in, bar-none, even including all those I visit in the United States. Prices there are in line with all good restaurants in Switzerland, but the food is so outstanding that you wouldn't care after-wards, even if it was twice as expensive. Try the Shrimp-Curry, its to die for. And the peach-smoothie with it...I had to have 2 just to fill my need.

If Thai is not your thing, the mall has 6 more restaurants in it that are just as clean and nice looking. Takes only 5 minutes to walk around the level where they are all located, which is on an even level with the hotel-lobby. (this mall has 3 levels).

If you are on a budget, go to the migros on the same level, 3 minutes from the hotel-lobby and buy anything you want to take to your room. All restaurants are open until 23.00 hours or later on weekends. All mall-stores are open until 20.00 hours. Has a big H&M in it too plus other cool stores.

Just check it out online at www.westside.ch (in english!!)

And last but not least, if you have read this far, the Bernaqua spa and pool is inside this complex as well. Takes only 2 minutes to walk to it from the hotel-lobby. Its probably the best pool-spa place in Switzerland and your hotel-stay includes 2.5 hours for free each day you stay there. (a 30 buck value!!) And the gym inside it is out of this world as well, with only the best and newest and most modern machines one could possibly work out on. And this spa-pool-gym gem is open every day from 9AM to 10.00PM!!

Also recommendable and highly satisfactory was the Spa/Massage services in the Bernaqua spa/pool/gym.

A bit on the pricey side for me, considering I am used to US-prices, but so top-notch
that in the end it didn't matter either. Not pricey if you are used to the Spa's and Massages in 5 STar hotels though, and at least as good as those.

And very easy to make an appointment through the hotel-front-desk. Even the day before they had still appointments available, but this could also be due to us being there in January.

All in all the best hotel-experience we have had in a long time and only second to the Kempinski Stay in St. Moritz. in 2002 which was our all-time best stay anywhere ever
...but then again that was/is a 5 Star hotel, and this little gem is not, though it gets 5 stars from us.

And in the beginning of this review they asked to describe all this in one sentence.
I can do better, i can do it in one word: ENJOY

In the US the Holiday Inn's are usually dated and tired looking. However, the Holiday Inn in Bern, Switzerland (West side) was great. After traveling all day on a train to get there it was very nice to have a nice hotel. Comfortable beds, a big bathroom with a nice tub and a clean room. However, the restaurant was horribly expensive and seemed it was our only option because we arrived so very late. Staff were very friendly and helpful.

the warm welcome was very nice, especially that we had came a long way from lucerne and there was snow all around. the travelling directions we had read on this same site were all clear enough to bring us to the doorstep of the hotel. the check in was done smoothly while I ate away the cookies.
the room was picture perfect to our style. my husband and I prefer the most basic and modern so we loved it. the view from our room was nice. the room and the bathroom was crystal clean, only wished the shower was built with a window panel seperating it from the wash basin as water spills over. I can not think of anything negative other than this point about the room.
the location of the hotel is, yes, a bit far from the center but was no problem for us as we found our way easily and because the hotel was much more economic when compared to the others situated in the center.
WHAT WE LOVED ABOUT THE HOTEL was the free 2,5 hours aquapark offer of the hotel. I was freed from the exam stress I had on the following day and with the outside covered in snow and us swimming in the exterior pool, what an experience it was...........:))))
there is no negative remark what so ever, just loved it, only wished it was closer to the center, but we definitely think that we might not have been able to stay here if it was in the center as it is certainly worth much more than it costs.

Location: About 10 minutes from the center of Bern if driving and around the same distance if traveling by train, the hotel is directly connected to Westside Mall. The station is just across the hotel. The Westside Mall isn't the greatest in terms of shop selection and restaurant choices. However, it's a great place to stock up on some basic items at the very large Migros (grocery store). Globus offers a good selection of wine and premium deli items. Paul is a good place to get a croissant and coffee if you don't mind a simple breakfast. Remember the shops are closed on Sundays.

Reception/Check-in: Nice and modern facilities. Reception staff was very helpful, answered all our questions with a smile and looked up my Priority Club number for me. Free cookies were also given to us.

Rooms: The room size was decent and it had hard wood floors. In fact, it felt a bit barren for some reason but the furniture, etc was all very modern and new. In November, the heat was turned on centrally and the A/C unit didn't respond to any input. Since it was too warm and stuffy, we opened the window a shade to get some air. It was still quiet enough for a good night's sleep.

Internet: Free internet (WiFi or wireless) but you have to register to get a password.

Parking: Don't use the garage below the mall which costs SFr.25 per day. Between the Shell Gas Station and the hotel, there is a metered lot within 2 minutes on foot that charges just SFr.2 for 10 hours of parking. Oddly, each additional hour between hour 10 to 20 then costs SFr.1 each. Once you go beyond 20 hours of consecutive parking, the rate skyrockets.

Overall/Value: The hotel costs SFr.134 per night. This is a fraction of the price we would have paid in Bern. The hotel is not the fanciest but it's modern and new. The location was convenient enough.

The location of the hotel is very nice with a nice view of the farm across the road. Being close to a nice an aqua park it’s convenient and easy to keep kids engaged. It has a shopping centre also very close to it which is very convenient, but, remember that everything will be closed by 8 pm.
The rooms are pretty comfortable with standard beds and good decore. Bathrooms are far better compared to many hotels in Switzerland with enough space and descent amenities.
The breakfast choices were excellent. And especially for kids, there are healthy choices around. The staffs were also very friendly. But, I found the lobby a bit shabby.
