The restaurant, reputedly the best in Basel, is housed in the former artist’s clubhouse at the base of the city’s art museum, also worth a visit. The lush murals of scantily clad ladies are reminiscent of those at the now closed Café des Artistes in New York. We are hovered over by several waiters and an obsequious maitre d’, but far from being onerous the service and crisp table linen is a pleasant change from the fast food world around us. This is clearly a place for fine dining. We arrive for dinner on the last day of the asparagus season, and three of our quartet order tender white spears, beautifully served. Two of our party also have an outstanding steak Tatare, always a difficult dish to pull off well. Over coffee, I’m introduced to Swiss single malt whisky, something new every day. Very expensive. Total with wine CHF 574.
