Alexander Hotel

The rooms are basic and a touch of paint would be nice. However, everything is clean and in working order. Staff very friendly and helpful. Besides the free mobility ticket (all public transport free during your stay) I appreciated their offer on their website of submitting a reasonable offer for the room price you would be prepared to pay. Depending on their degree of occupancy, the hotel replies within 24h bay accepting your offer or by submitting their 'lowest' price. An original idea which is worth pursuing.

I stayed at this hotel for two nights, the room was very small and basic. Because it was so small it heated up and became very stuffy, I had the choice of opening the window, though the trams are directly out the front so it was extremely loud, or have the window shut and boil... Therefore I got only a few hours sleep...

The included breakfast is also very basic, the meats look as though they had been sitting there for a long time, and all the bugs flying over the fruit was bit of a put-off..

It does however offer free wifi... And is in a good location.

For the price in Basel, it was not to bad, though look around first because there are some better ones, they were just unavailable these nights for me...

Room Tip: do not get a room on the road side.

To get to your hotel – 2 choices. Pay the taxi man 45 SWF for a 10-15 min journey to your hotel. OR pay nothing (if you have an official hotel reservation) and take FREE public transport. The bus you want will come in a few minutes, it’s the ’50 SBB Bannhoff’. Stay on it until you get to the train station, about 15-20 mins. With your back to the train station look across the road to the Tram park, and go to lane 3, and catch tram 2. Get the ‘2’ and stay on it until you pass over the bridge and come to the Exhibition Centre stop (say about 20 mins more). Get off, walk back to the main road and turn right, and walk a few hundred metres, the Alexander Hotel will be on your left, just past a few street bars etc. So, pay nothing to get to your hotel. The hotel itself is pretty understated, its fairly basic and functional nothing to write home about. Room is big and orange, with a big bed with nice wooden corners ideal to crack your shin on, as I obviously did. The bathroom is sort of 70’s retro or something. Old Habitat meets Fort Cortina, it’s a bit of a flashback, shower isn’t overly welcoming a bit dark but its all clean and works. This room is business only, not somewhere to bring her-indoors. Along there road as I mentioned there are a few bars and half a dozen places to eat plus the strip joint etc. This end of town isn’t especially spectacular sort of end of the line feel about things. Functional, keeps the rain off, no added appeal other than a provides somewhere to kip for the night. Bed is huge and comfortable, no nasty plastic matrass cover or anything. The pillow was so soft I had to double it over, but ok. Silent at night, easy to sleep, very comfortable bed. Another chance to smack the shin on the corner of the bed in the morning. There is not so much space around the room, there are many obstacles to avoid gaining an injury from. Thank goodness it’s a flat screen TV mounted on the wall. Breakfast, perfectly acceptable continental nothing dramatic though.

Alexander is the cheapest of the hotels near to Basler Messe (exhibition square), and a reasonable option for a short business visit. It's clean, everything works, free wifi, but the main reason for staying is the cost, about half that of nearby alternatives. Aim to get a single room for no more than CHF90. Buffet breakfast is included in the prices. Bathroom is very small with a shower only, and the room neat and functional rather than comfortable. It's noisy- street noise and adjacent rooms will disturb you unless you bring effective earplugs; I could hear next door snoring. If the price asked goes beyond CHF100/night go elsewhere for more comfort if you can afford the extra. Basel is a compact city with great public transport, so a hotel that looks far away on a map may be only a 10-15 minute tram ride away. Definitely not recommended for holidays/leisure travel.

We stayed 2 nights at the Alexander which has been awarded 3 stars. Usually in Switzerland 3-star hotels are very reasonable. This one is an old establishment which has been refurbished but with very little soul. The rooms are very austere and the renovation leaves you with pieces of furniture in which you will knock your head or other essential organs. The bathrooms are equipped but they reflect the aged establishment. The renovation did not inject any new spirit into the old hotel. Management gives away free tickets for the public transport system of the city which is a nice gesture. We wouldn't revisit the place once again when in Basel.

Yes this hotel is run down, but it is clean and really cheap for Basel. We paid £60 a night through Octopus.
The breakfast is an all you can eat continental (cereal, yougurt, meat, cheese, breads, oj and coffee) and was really nice.
The hotel includes a free ''Basel Mobility'' pass so all your travel on the trams are free! The tram stops really close to the hotel, and if your keen it is only a 15 min walk down a nice main street to the old town.
The only downside would be if you are a light sleeper as there is a nightclub downstairs, which goes till about 4am.
The staff were very helpful with advice on what to see and how to get there!
Overall really good, as expected a lot worse!

I simply can't recommend this hotel, we stayed here as part of a larger party with a major coach operator in the NW of England. The room was clean recently refurbished to some extent but still tatty. The bar really was more of a disco and there's nowhere to sit other than in your room and then on hard chair. The food was overcooked and served in the restraunt next door effectively. Now as this was part of a tour the food normally served in the Restraunt may be much better but what they served us was poor in my opinion. Reminded me of School dinners. There are many more hotels near by so I'd look for one of them first. Can't say much about the staff never really saw any.
