“Very reasonable for Basel”
Reviewed August 19, 2013

Reasonably priced for Basel and in a great location. We stayed in a double room and found the industrial design very nice. The hostel itself is an old building converted with an industrial theme lots of concrete but it works very well. The breakfast buffet is very generous and they also offer a very reasonable 3 course evening meal if you wish to pay (I'd recommend it very cheap compared to the rest of Basel) There is a nice outdoor terrace next to a little river and you can also get a pint for a price that doesn't make you gulp!

In theory, the hostel had everything we needed- it was clean, in a lovely location, staff were nice... However we paid a lot (£35 each?) for a bunk-bed in a 8 bed room, which is the same as we paid in hotels in other cities in Europe. We woke up to a knock on the door before 11am asking us to check-out, which for the price seemed a little ridiculous, having checked in late the previous evening and not arrived back until 5am!

It's a lovely family hotel, but not a travellers budget hostel as advertised, in price or atmosphere. Backpackers avoid, families enjoy!

Nice and clean room, and very abundant breakfast.
The price is probably high for an hostel in non-Swiss standars, but it's very good looking at a standard hotel in Basel.
An unlimited tram/bus ticket is given for the whole stay, and that makes you save a LOT of money and trouble.

The hostel has a nice and open engtrance, the reception and the bar is in the same open area which is very spacey with Industrial design. The rooms are clean and and have high ceillings, this hight gives a pleasant space. The combination of wood and concrete in the rooms give a industrial look. The hostel is on walking distance from the city centre of Basel.

I quite liked this place. I got a private room and loved the cement walls and huge windows. The decor would definitely not be for everyone because it's industrial/minimalistic. The staff were helpful when I needed an adaptor.
It's not cheap (for a single room) even for a hostel, but that's true of the area in general...

It is somewhat like in another century in this youthhostel, in a total positive way. I stayed in a single room, got towels and the beds were already made. I didn't mind the concrete room, in the opposite, it was a new and different experience and I enjoyed myself. The entrance area is really impressive and a great mixture between antique and modern classics.

Go running along the Rhein, you get to see a lot of this pretty city that way. Visit the nearby paper museum. There is much to do in the area and you can do many things by foot!

Negative: even though the other guests (on the hallway and in the shared bathrooms) weren't noisy at all I could hear almost everything in my room. So if you really want to have your peace, then book a hotel in the city. The single room in this youth hostel really seemed a bit too expensive for the value one gets.

Room Tip: ask for a room as far away from the shared bathrooms as possible (less noisy).

I thought that by having a double room with en suite that it would not be dissimilar to a basic hotel. I was wrong. It may be my own fault but we hated the new Basel youth hostel. Inside maybe youngsters would like it but for us, there was no comfort to be had anywhere. Had it been a cheaper option than a regular hotel, we could have accepted this only it was on a par with others which would have had at least a chair or a tv provided for our comfort. The shower taps couldn't be set reliably on a temperature. There was no window to it, fine if a fan had been fitted for ventilation. We saw a cockroach in the 3rd floor hallway. The food was okay but the general consensus among those we spoke to was that the place seemed a little above itself in attitude for a youth hostel and yet didn't provide the extra service or facilities to support that fact. For a double room for two nights we were charged for 4 persons and we weren't expecting that so it really was no cheaper than going to the local Ibis. I'll never stay there again.
