Owner description: The Kunstmuseum Basel is home to one of the largest and oldest public museum collections in Europe. In its unique history, it has assembled works from the early fifteenth century to the present. The Kunstmuseum Basel houses the Galerie (Gallery) and the Kupferstichkabinett (Department of Prints and Drawings). The main focus is on paintings and drawings by artists active in the Upper Rhine region between 1400 and 1600 and of the 19th and 21st century. The Kunstmuseum Basel possesses the world`s largest collection of works by the Holbein family. Further examples of Renaissance art include major pieces by masters such as Konrad Witz, Martin Schongauer, Lucas Cranach the Elder and Matthias Grünewald. Most of these early treasures originally belonged to the collection of a Basel lawyer, Basilius Amerbach. Purchased by the city in 1661, they formed the core of the world`s first public municipal museum. Paintings by Basel-born Arnold Böcklin feature among the 19th-century highlights. In the field of 20th-century art, the accent is on Cubism (Picasso, Braque, Léger), German Expressionism, Abstract Expressionism and American art since 1950. Contemporary art is exhibited at the Museum für Gegenwartskunst (Museum of Contemporary Art).

“So impressed with this collection - don't miss it”

Allow several hours to do this museum justice and to take a break at the delightful bistro. One of our favorite museums in Switzerland. Check out the museum shop - bought the coolest umbrella ever - there are white splotches on it (looks like bird droppings) and when it rains little drops of different colors appear on the white patches. The color disappears when the umbrella dries.

“Highly recommended -- Give yourself time here”
Reviewed February 11, 2013

This museum is world class. For the permenant collection rent the audio guide for a bargain 2 Swiss Francs or 2 Euro. I am glad I started from the top floor and worked my way down. This way I caught most of the famous and obscure works by painters of the 19th century and beyond. The musuem's holdings are extraordinary. Savor every minute here. Do not miss the Holbein exhibit. Allow yourself at least four hours; take a coffee break if need be. A walk away from town center. I climbed the stairs next to the theatre and St. Elizabeth church, walked toward the major bank interssession and follwed the sign leading right to the museum. Enjoy.

Amazing collection of art work you will never want to miss. Creativity at its best. Also entry fees is nominal compared to the experience that you get there.

Reviewed January 14, 2013

The permanent collection is worth seeing and they create really good temp. exhibtions. they just started to build a new annex to be able to show more of their collection. Just a short stroll from the city center with other interesting museums and sights close by.
