Owner description: The Kunstmuseum Basel is home to one of the largest and oldest public museum collections in Europe. In its unique history, it has assembled works from the early fifteenth century to the present. The Kunstmuseum Basel houses the Galerie (Gallery) and the Kupferstichkabinett (Department of Prints and Drawings). The main focus is on paintings and drawings by artists active in the Upper Rhine region between 1400 and 1600 and of the 19th and 21st century. The Kunstmuseum Basel possesses the world`s largest collection of works by the Holbein family. Further examples of Renaissance art include major pieces by masters such as Konrad Witz, Martin Schongauer, Lucas Cranach the Elder and Matthias Grünewald. Most of these early treasures originally belonged to the collection of a Basel lawyer, Basilius Amerbach. Purchased by the city in 1661, they formed the core of the world`s first public municipal museum. Paintings by Basel-born Arnold Böcklin feature among the 19th-century highlights. In the field of 20th-century art, the accent is on Cubism (Picasso, Braque, Léger), German Expressionism, Abstract Expressionism and American art since 1950. Contemporary art is exhibited at the Museum für Gegenwartskunst (Museum of Contemporary Art).

For those interested in art this is definitvely a must, the most interesting visits of course include a guided tour. There are very nice paintings from Hohlbein and from other Swiss artists. Pay also attention to the special exhibitions, e. g. the Van Gogh exhibition that was in the museum recently. I enjoyed every visit so far!

The Kunstmuseum has a fine, representative sample of art from, among other works, Impressionist through Minimalist artists. And, unlike museums like the Modern and the Met in New York City, it appears to be relatively uncrowded. We didn't have to jostle for position to really look at a painting, and we could plant ourselves in front of a painting and look at it closely and for an extended period of time. It was an enjoyable, refreshing way to look at art.

I've seen works here by artists of which I've seen only photographs. Unforgettable experience. The Kunstmuseum is well guarded; that is someone will shadow you as you stroll around. A bit bothersome but necessary, understandably.

Some beautiful paintings and sculptures, definately worth a visit. Large and spacious with some famous and not so famous painters. The modern art section was very interesting.......

The Kunstmuseum Basel is one of the best art museums in Switzerland. It is housed in a beautiful modernist building of the 1930s and houses an excellent collection of both classical art (including a large number of portraits by Has Holbein the Young, who was born in Basel) and modern art including top-notch American art. The temporary exhibitions are normally well-curated and very interesting. The museum has a contemporary art wing about 500 metres away on the river Rhein, housed in a smaller building that must have been a mill as it has a brook running through it. The permanent collection is small but there are often good temporary exhibitions
