Owner description: The Museum in the Church The Barfusser Church owes its name to the barefooted Franciscans, the mendicant order that built it as a convent church in the 14th century. As the HMB flagship, the Barfusser Church has housed one of the oldest collections on the Upper Rhine since 1894. Among its treasures are attractions of world-class calibre such as the Basel Cathedral Treasury, the Basel Dance of Death and some very fine medieval tapestries. Representing the Early Modern Age is a Great Cabinet of Curiosities showcasing Basel's long tradition as a city of private collectors ranging from Erasmus of Rotterdam, the Amerbach and Faesch families to the famous historian Jacob Burckhardt. Visitors are invited to embark on a journey through the ages and to discover the history of Basel from Celtic times to the 21st century. The museum shop stocks an attractive range of cards and gifts.

The exhibits are exquisitely done--lighting, layout, materials. The former church is a perfect space for this historical museum. If they would provide english descriptions it would rate 5 stars, but here is only the occasional English translation in a few of the room plaques. Still worth a visit.

I went in at the end of the day (free) and had a nice walk-through. You could spend more time, and the exhibits were well labeled and described. Two levels and lots to see from historical canon to individual collections or decorative items.

My wife and I were just blown away by the collection here (permanent collection). We learned a lot about Basel, it's history, it's key historical figures, etc, and that really made our stay special. Most things are not in English, but there is a guide book in English that explains every single item. You have to match a number in front the item with the number in the book. Most (but not all) items had the number prominently displayed. Other items, we just had to search for, which was fairly easy.

I HIGHLY recommend this to anyone who visits Basel and wants to really learn about where they are.

I have been here to visit this museum because of Alpetra exhibition which was really fantastic. I have heard about this relics, but now I find it glorious, there gathered lots of staff from that part and also tried to recreate the original buildings.
The rest of museum is worth to visit as well.
You can reach here on foot from the main station or take tram number 12 to reach here.
