I stayed here with my daughter and son-in-law prior to a Viking River Cruise from Basel to Amsterdam. The location was perfect for taking a tram around the city. The hotel gives tram passes for your length of stay which is a plus. The no. 2 tram takes about 15 minutes to the main train station and has a stop across the street from the hotel.
I booked and prepaid our rooms and got a very nice discount on the room cost. The check in was very efficient and we were offered an upgrade on the room. At $80.00 per night extra it was still a great price. The room was large with a sitting area, espresso maker and work desk. I called Housekeeping twice for small adjustments and the response time was very quick. I was pleased they sent a young woman to assist me.
Breakfast was typical Swiss with breads, cheese and a chef for made-to-order requests. More than I expected for about $25.00 US. Everyone I came in contact with the hotel had a fresh ready to help attitude and the Concierge Desk helped us with our requests and made helpful suggestions. Don't want to forget the Bar and the couches in front of the fireplace in the lobby. Nice added extra for a drink before bed.
For a hotel advertized as catering to business travelers, I felt very safe, comfortable and well attended to by the staff as a leisure traveler. Around the hotel are many coffee shops, various stores and a great restaurant with local Swiss food and great local beer on the corner from the hotel. Within walking distance of the downtown area. Loved the hotel.

Room Tip: The Business floor was quiet and room was larger than standard size.

The Swissotel was very easy to get to, being right by the Messe with several trams routes stopping almost right outside. It’s only a short ride – about 5 minutes – across the river from the old town and 15 -20 minutes on foot, depending on your speed!
Upon arrival, our reservation could not be found. I’m not sure whether this was the fault the ‘to remain un-named’ major online booking site or the Swissotel group, but it transpired that our booking – and also the payment – had been made to the Swissotel in Zurich. We were offered complimentary drinks from the bar while the reception staff worked out what the problem was. About twenty five minutes after arrival, we were allocated rooms. The situation was very well handled by the reception team, but it wasn’t the best of starts and certainly wasn’t the smooth check-in I would expect from a chain such as Swissotel. Upon checkout, we had the same problem again when the hotel wanted to charge the credit card for a second time. Hmmm...
My room was well appointed and very clean, with various options for lighting around the bed, desk, armchair etc. The bathroom was equally as modern and clean. All the fittings and equipment were of good quality. My main gripe with the room was the temperature – when I arrived, the thermostat was already set to minimum, yet the room didn’t feel cool, although the noisy fan would suggest that a lot of cool air was being blown into the room!
So despite the bed being comfortable, I didn’t actually sleep as well as I had hoped, due to the temperature of the room. Having the window open wasn’t really an option because of the traffic noise from outside. The next day I reported the temperature issue and was told it would be looked at. That night, the room was just as stuffy – I don’t think much ‘looking at’ was done! It certainly wasn’t unbearable as otherwise I would have changed rooms, of course, but it was not as comfortable as I would have liked it or, indeed, expected.
The hotel is very smart and modern in feel and all of the staff I met were friendly. Wifi in the hotel is incredibly expensive and I didn’t use it. (Strangely, I wasn’t able to pick-up any free wifi around the hotel, or indeed anywhere in the city centre except for 10 minutes given to tourists at the tourist info centre.) Breakfast in the hotel restaurant on Sunday morning really was very good – pretty expensive in comparison to some hotel chains, I would say, but the quality was good and after all, it’s Switzerland!
All in all, I recommend this Swissotel – other than the temperature, it really was very, very nice!

We have got a special discount for this hotel and therefore could afford this 5 star hotel for 2 nights during our stay in Basel.
Pros:
- Location is excellent, many tram lines go there. Tram #2 comes from the Central Train station.
- We were given free bus pass for public transportation during our stay, which is nice
- Old city is in 15-20 minutes walking distance though
- Very friendly and client oriented staff
- Clean and nice rooms
- Included sauna, hammam and gym facilities
- internet was available at the floor lobby (2 computers) for free, but also available with wi-fi access for an additional payment

Cons:
- Parking is for an additional payment
- No swimming pool
- No free wi-fi

Now I can nit-pick for Britain, as you might see from my other reviews, but try as I might I could find nothing at all with this hotel to fault. Here are two examples of brilliant customer service I received there:

My PA had booked me into a single room, which, as I'm well over 6 feet tall wasn't great. The hotel was pretty full, but they somehow found me a nice room with a double bed, even though we'd booked through a travel agent.

On the two occasions I called the reception, they arrived at my room within two minutes - I almost wondered if they were waiting outside the door in case I called!

Location - if you're at the Exhibition Centre, couldn't be better as it's attached to the hotel! If you're in the old town for the banks etc, they give you a free tram pass (as do all hotels in
Basel) and you can jump on tram 6 or 14 every few minutes from just outside the hotel. Unless you feel that the tram is a bit beneath you, if so, hang up your hang ups and get out with the locals - you'll see a lot of Louis Vuitton bags on the tram! Only 5 minutes on the tram to the centre, but you could walk it in 15. Don't be put off by that making it sound a long way away - Basel is a very safe and friendly place and I'd be happy to walk the journey at night.

Gym - being a keen fan of Concept 2 Rowing Machines in gyms around the world (okay, you got to work off the calories somehow and sitting in a meeting doesn't quite do it for me!) - I was delighted they had one, and that all the equipment was fresh and new.

Breakfast was great - lovely choice and you could do healthy or fatty, probably in proportion to how much you enjoyed the rowing machine!

I stayed at The Three Kings (Les Trois Rois) a few weeks back - you can read my review on that if you like. Plenty of charm and character but about three times the price of this hotel and both are five star. Could recommend either, although the Swissotel doesn't give you a view of the Rhine, so if you feel that it's worth the extra for the view, go for it and stump up! Otherwise stay at the Swissotel and enjoy Swiss hospitality par excellence.

Finally, they give you tea and coffee-making facilities at the Swissotel, and for a Brit, that must surely swing it! You can even store your milk in the fridge - now, if that isn't your cup of tea, what is!

Room Tip: Ask for one with an outside window.

We stayed here for three nights as part of an official visit group in the first part of a Europe tour. The location, facilities, service and room quality were simply superb. The breakfast was very good. The visitor's travelpass given by the hotel made visiting around the city through the excellent tram and bus service very easy. Memorable stay.

The Swissotel Le Plaza in Basel is a very nice and conveniently located hotel. Book early, or in low-season and you can find very good prices. The sauna and hammam were very well appointed and the fitness room well equipped with complimentary fresh fruit and water. The location is perfect for a quick zip on the (free with the hotel card) trams. Valet parking and the highest standard in staff. The Grill 25 restaurant really does have GREAT steaks!

Comfortable room with a real queen bed (not two twins jammed together) and English language channels on the TV (a real plus for lonely, jet-lagged Americans!). Very clean and comfortable, no exterior noise. The famous European tea kettle was much appreciated. Room service for breakfast was prompt and courteous, food was good. Gym in the hotel was surprisingly spacious and well appointed. Location of hotel is perfect for easy trams rides to everywhere.
