“Best experience in trattoria aroma”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 18, 2013

Went to aroma on suggestion, with picky clients. The whole evening went fantastic - best Italian food in a long time, great venue (not too big, very well designed, better reserve in advance), wonderful, personal and attentive service, ALL food made right there by the chef, down to the incredible desserts. Came back with a different group right next evening. From now on my favorite place in Basel for sure.

“Nice Italian but food overcooked”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 5, 2013

Tried this restaurant based on Tripadvisor reviews together with a friend. I had the oven baked aubergine and was disappointed that it had been overcooked. My friend had a pasta dish which was very nice. The atmosphere in the restaurant was very good and the service was good.

“Good Place to go in Basel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 25, 2013

We went to Aroma in April during our visit in Basel. I love the atmosphere as it is a small restaurant with around 8 tables. People are nice. We tried various appetizers and hand-made spaghetti. It is delicious!!! I must go Aroma again when I have chance to visit Basel again.

“Finally a real I-T-A-L-I-A-N restaurant!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 17, 2013 via mobile

I often go to Basel for work, and I generally avoid italian restaurants when I travel abroad.
I found aroma by chance, and it has been a real surprise!
Actually it is a roman cuisine, with special tipical dishes. They make their own pasta, and the quality is evident.
The owner and weiters are really nice and kind.
Definitely a Roman restaurant transplanted in Switzerland!!

“Fresh, seasonal ingredients, Stefania and Giovanni are great hosts and in the business because they LOVE it”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 23, 2013

Stefania and Giovanni left careers in other areas to open a restaurant. They chose to go into this business and their love of it is apparent in everything they do. The are the consummate hosts and the restaurant is small and cosy. I have taken business groups there and they thoroughly enjoyed it. Sometimes its nice to have dinner in a "normal" place when you are out for a business dinner, or when you are on the road for weeks on end. Somewhere where you can feel like you are out with friends for the evening, somewhere you can feel at home. Aroma feels like home, it gets fulls marks for atmosphere.

Naturally atmosphere isnt the only reason you go to a restaurant. All cuisines depend on the quality of their ingredients, the italian maybe more so than most as the dishes are simple and so you cannot mask bad ingredients. Mozarella for example - a beautiful buffalo mozarella is soft on the inside, almost liquid, with a slight skin in parts on the outside, the textures of softness and a little calcium bite of that "skin" and the oozing middle and the filaments of cheese are what makes the mozarella experience all that it can be, the taste is a part of this, but not all. The chinese coined the phrase "mouthfeel" which is now used all over the place, great ingredients satisfy all the senses and the ingredients aroma uses and the way they prepare the food is amazing. Aroma uses great ingredients excepitionally, the flavours play off each other in a symphony of tastes and texture. Everything is homemade with utter attention to detail.

The food: The starters are amazing - fresh mozarella, fried calamari, fish salad, stuffed mushrooms, rice balls filled with cheese and fried, prosciutto crudo. When Aroma first opened the starter plate was much more extensive than it is today, this no doubt due to necessary economy -serving mozarella, prosciutto, calamari fritti, stuffed mushrooms, roasted peppers, roasted zucchini and olives with bread for a pittance per person didnt strike me as a viable proposition business wise when they started out, but it was amazing. The starters are still amazing though and copious so not to worry:)

Mains: again amazing, first time I had guaciale (pork cheek) - texture, crunch, softness and flavour (if you like pork) in a tomato sauce a revelation

Dessert: Tiramisu - best we ever had, the panna cotta was too solid for my taste, too gluey, but that is the only thing I ever wasnt totally convinced by and I have been going there a lot.

Coffee: best espresso in Basel restaurants, best espresso in Basel cafes to date: Da Graziella
