Hotel Merian am Rhein

I went in this hotel as my habitual hotel is Basel was full ;
I was there for a business trip and coming from a four star hotel in Lausanne.
The staff is polite and very friendly at the reception, nothing to say.
I had a first dinner at their retsaurant and, hoestly it was delicious. The " maitre d hotel" recommended me a very nice wine, but really expensive; they pour you three drops in the glass and charge you 10 chf. Pay attention if you want to have a glass with ur friends!
dinner was very good, I would say gastronomic , "had perfect foie gras poele" and a nice eyerib.
The hotel is well located and have a garage; but totally no charm. Rooms are very clean .
I recommend just for a night, but certainly not if u are trying something romantic!

Room Tip: ask a room on the river; actuallly they renovate the street and it is very noisy on the road side, w...

The hotels has a good location on the Rhein. Many of the rooms however overlook the road and have no view - so book yours carefully. The rooms over the road and low down have traffic noise and this will prevent you opening a window which you may have to do as there is no air-con. The room are very clean and reasonably functional (the showers are poor) and remind me a little of a private hospital room. The staff are good and helpful. There is free cable internet in the rooms which function if you turn your wireless connection off. There is free wireless internet in the lobby but in the room you have to pay - so those with thin computers bring your cable adapter. Breakfast is adequate with a limited choice. Price intermediate for Basel - and value OK for Switzerland but not so good for the rest of Europe.

I have stayed here before and the location, garage parking and restaurant all contributed to me returning. Immaculate hotel with friendly staff. Rooms are comfortable and quite clinical in appearance. The balcony with the view of the Rhein and the city with its bridges is great. The restaurant and service is fabulous and I have reviewed that separately. It is not a cheap hotel but this is Switzerland after all. I certainly would stay here again on my next trip.

Room Tip: It is worth getting a Rhein view room. The views at night are fab.

First off, let me say that this property is beautiful, and has the best view of any hotel I have stayed at short of Dubai. It is very well maintained, the staff was very helpful, inteernet was good, breakfast beteer than average. It is not however air condidtioned, and as it was in high 80's during my trip, the location of the wonderful view, made this room unbeable in after noons.

It also was quite noisy at night, as I had to sleep with the balcony door wife open to be able to sleep. again, wondrful location, nice staff, gorgous view, but no A/c. If comfort is first thing on your mind, youmight want to look elsewhere.

Room Tip: Get high room on river for view, city side for comfort.

Hotel is at heart of Basel on Rhein bank, stuning view over river. Hotel is clean, my room was on the river side, so enjoy stay very much. Room was clean and spacious, but no WiFi in hotel except in loby. Food in hotel is very good, staf nice and friendly ready to help. Warmly recomending this hotel.

The location is what bumps my rating on this hotel up from 3 to 4. The hotel itself is good, my room was clean and comfortable, and I had absolutely nothing to complain about. But the location, directly on the river and just across the bridge from old town, is perfect. I had a room on the 5th floor with a view of the river. I slept with the windows open and was not at all bothered by the trams or other noise. I did find that I needed to pull the curtains closed, however, because the spotlights from the bridge (or maybe they were from the hotel) were quite bright. I would happily stay here again on future trips to Basel.

Basel is a charming but noisy city due to the abundance of tramways. They rattle at all times during the day and most of the night, starting again in the wee hours of the morning. If you happen to stay in a room facing the back of the hotel, you will not be able to sleep. Things change drastically though if you book a room facing the Rhine river, especially if it's on a higher floor. The view is fantastic and the noise no longer a problem. Location is superb, with a 5-minute walk across the small bridge to city center. Rooms are rather small but well laid out. They have all the usual amenities, and attention to details one can expect from a Best Western hotel. Staff is exceptionally friendly and helpful and speak English very well. Breakfast buffet (included in the price) is served in a charming, expansive room and the food selection is very good (though no omelets made to order). Fresh delicious breads, wonderful cheeses and the usual offerings. The price is high for what you get if you use N.American standards, but this is more of a Swiss issue than the hotel. Nothing is cheap in this country.

Room Tip: Higher floors facing the Rhine. Be aware they may be hot during summer months.
