“The best hotel I have ever stayed at”
Reviewed June 26, 2013 via mobile

The st gotthard is located right outside the main station in Basel and major tram terminal. The staff are all incredibly friendly and helpful. The service given is second to none. I have stayed here a few times and stayed in a few different rooms and each room was exceptional. Tastefully decorated. Very clean. Free mini bar. Television with over 300 channels in many languages so all tastes are catered for. Breakfast is the usual continental breakfast buffet. All the food is of excellent quality and the restaurant staff are again very friendly and helpful. Breakfast is served in a fantastic, rather stately looking room. Free wifi is available for the duration if your stay. Located right next door is a McDonald's and a supermarket. There are many restaurants, bars, and a Starbucks within 5 minutes walk. I cannot recommend this hotel enough.

I stay in Basel every year and have stayed at many hotels there, unfortunately, for a city this size and with this wealth there should be lots of nice hotels to choose from - but there are not. The Hilton rated at 5 stars would be 3 star anywhere else and priced ridiculously high, therefore, I choose the St. Gotthard because it's rooms are quite comfortable with large screen lcd tv's with lots of channels, a free minibar, great breakfast buffet and nice staff. It's excellent location is across from main train station and from the city tram system which is wonderfully efficient to use. It's rated 4 stars and it's not quite that many because it does not have an exercise room and the beds/pillows are not all that comfortable, but certainly adequate. It is fairly priced for it's quality, however, beware that prices double during fair and convention weeks which are quite often in Basel. The bathrooms are nice, if small, and the rooms I've had always have had showers - no separate bath or bathrobes. I don't care about a bath tub but bathrobes are always a nice amentiy. Overall, it's a good choice in a city that doesn't have too many choices for decent hotels. Choose a room in the older wing at the "comfort level" or above, and avoid the tiny standard rooms. The tram does run outside the hotel though you cannot hear it too much, but if sound level is a big issue for you then ask for an interior courtyard room which will be quiet.

Room Tip: Comfort level type room or above that level in the older wing, avoid the tiny standard rooms

Excellent breakfast. Rooms vary significantly in size but they are all very clean and fresh. Great location, if you use the train SBB. Front desk staff are very friendly and professional. Tanya is the best. The only draw backs that I can think of is the proximity to the trams which can be a little noisy but I've stayed there upwards of 12 times in the last 3 years and it has never bothered me. The hotel has recently installed wifi in the rooms. Kudos for the initiative, but... the signal is bad and not very stable; both in the rooms and in the lobby. My connections kept dropping. Not a huge bother if your reading the paper or casually surfing but a real pain if one is working on a secure connection.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with good wifi signal, if you will be working from your room.

Dear Guest
Thank you so very much for your very kind and encouraging review. Your contribution helps us better understand the needs and concerns of our customers and what is appreciated. Thank you for complimenting Tanja on her service-orientation. There's nothing more rewarding than receiving a direct positive response from our guest for the efforts made.
In terms of the WiFi connection I would like point out that we've received the HTNG EMEA technology innovation award for the "channel blanket" solution we've deployed in the hotel. We periodically check connectivity and the last check-up was June 6. And we had great throughput internally. The bottleneck lies with the internet connection bandwith which we are working on. A competitor to swisscom and cablecom from a neighboring canton is planning to offer Gbps connections to an affordable price. Once we have that installed, you should no longer have problems with your connection when the hotel is full. We apologize for this inconvenience.
We hope to have yet again another chance to welcome you at our hotel!
Warmest regards from Basel

Very quiet and comfortable family hotel, close to the train station. Breakfast is especially good, everything is always fresh and delicious. Mini-bar is free of charge. Some rooms are a bit small but nice. I always stay here when I come to Basel.

THis was a nice hotel though I opnly spent a very brief night there on business. My only caveat is that this hotel does sit directly on a busy tram line that carries traffic until late evening and again starting early morning. I would certainly stay there again the next time I'm in Basel.

Room Tip: Ask for a room not directly on the Tram tracks.

Have stayed several times in Hotel St.Gotthard. It is easily accessable from airport or train
Station. Some rooms are rather small but well equiped, and if on the inside very quiet.
A comfy, old-fashioned atmosphere, clean, friendly staff and perfect breakfast. We shall
Stay there on our net trip again.

Room Tip: For a quiet room ask for one on the inside.

Hotel St Gotthard offers almost everything the big chains offer. Service is fantastic and friendly. From the breakfast staff to the reception staff, everyone is friendly and helpful. The only drawback is it sits just near a busy tram route which can be noisy until late in the evening and starting again early in the morning.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the back. The rooms to the front are noisy due to the tram and none of the rooms...
