“Nice setting but miserable serving staff”
Reviewed March 3, 2013 via mobile

Went here for a coffee and to sit in the attractive square in the sun. There was no table service outside which was a bit of a surprise but not really a problem. Went inside and was served a very nice coffee by a pair of very miserable looking girls. They were having some kind of low level panic due to their calculator breaking but even when they got another they still looked surly. Maybe a customer service job is not the right career path for them (then again best steer clear of anything that requires mathematics too...)

“If the sun is shining this is the place to be!”
Reviewed January 24, 2012

This beautiful little cafe is one of my all time favorites in Basel. Set in an old square just behind marktplatz the atmosphere is brilliant and so is the tea and coffee selection. Food selection is a bit limited but what they have is scrummy! The crowd here is pretty eclectic, students, ladies who lunch, tourists, older folk and the occasional suit. When the sun is out the square is perfect for people watching while drinking a bowl (yep, a bowl!) of tea and munching on the yummy (and for Basel, cheap) veggi pie and salad.

“THE alternative coffee shop in Basel”
Reviewed December 26, 2010

Going to the Roter Engel (i.e. red angel) means getting your own things at the bar - things you don't get everywhere, such as cereal coffee served in a huge bowl, verveine tea from actual dried leaves, grannie's semolina pudding with raisins and syrup or a huge chunk of home-made vegetable quiche. This is on top of the usual selection of coffees and soft drinks and some pastry, sandwiches and cakes, of course.
All year round, you can enjoy your drinks out in the court (one of Basel's last few real ancient ones); red blankets make this a comfortable option even on chilly days. Or you choose one of the wooden tables and benches inside where to the left of you, a group of students wearing shawls and home-knit woolen jumpers are having a serious, political discussion, to the right, a local writer is taking notes for her next novel and in a sunny corner by the window, an elderly couple is enjoying their afternoon cakes and coffee.
