Port Cunnington Lodge & Resort

If you want a Taste of Muskoka, this is it! Very spacious yet cozy, remote resort in its own bay within the lake of bays. Great View, great swimming and good suites... a little pricy but worth it

We're just back from our annual Muskoka summer trip, this time for 2 weeks at Port Cunnington Lodge. This is a great place for a low key, relaxed family summer holiday. Accommodations, all of which are cottages or housekeeping units, are nice, clean and well appointed with the basics plus some bonusses like newer comfy beds and fireplaces. Some units are meal plan optional, which we chose becase we didnt want to miss dinners at our Muskoka favourites (we still had the option of dining in the Lodge, where the food is very good, with a little notice to the chef when we planned to pop in for dinner). More things we enjoyed: well stocked outdoor firepits (for s'mores and roasting marshmallows) at night, free use of canoes, paddleboards and kayaks, a diving and jumping platform into the deep lake and a shallow beach with a weed free sandy lake bottom for splashing. The fishing was great (our 9 year old caught countless bass including three huge ones) and there's lots of free docking for boats, with a marina and launch nearby for boating on very large Lake of Bays.

Room Tip: Units in Great Horned Owl are little off the beaten path, quiet and close to a lovely point and dock...

Review period. We went in the fall of 2010. We have prevously tried other cottages in the spring (3 are mentioned below).
Location: Location is about 20 minutes east of Huntsville on the Lake of Bays. The property is quite large and scenic right on the Lake of Bays. It features about 15 different types of accomodations from rooms only to older model housekeeping cottages to very new, large plush cottages. The property has a sandy beach, an outdoor play area, horseshoes, basketball court, a putting green, several docks to walk around on, a boat house with accessories for use of canoes, a library, a modest games room, a modest work out room and a dining room and bar. If you choose a multi-suite hotel type room, you will need to take a meal plan at the lodge because there is no cooking facility in the rooms. We tried one of these accomodations one year (the Sandpiper) and the rooms resembled a hotel type style and were comfortable and reasonably spacous with a fireplace, comfortable bed and small sitting area. There was not much of a view at the Sandpiper, but it was fine. The meals were good and service at the dining room was pleasant. This will serve you well if you do not want to cook and do not mind eating at a certain time. We also tried the Brown Owl with another family (7 persons including 3 children). The Brown Owl was a housekeeping cottage where you prepare your own meals. It has a reasonable view of the water, it had a large screened-in porch, outdoor deck with BBQ, 4 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms?, lots of space, full kitchen. The last visit we tried the Golden Eagle (with 9 persons including 3 children) which is the newest cottage with a full view of the Lake, very spacious interior and common area, 4 bedrooms (3 have a lake view - 3 downstairs, one upstairs), 5 bathrooms (all ensuites and one extra), full kitchen, large sitting area, outdoor screen porch, deck, BBQ, one real fireplace. All linens and kitchen utensils, china and glasses are provided. Of note, there is also a completely separate small cottage or 5th bedroom with ensuite joined to the main cottage by the deck. We thought it could be a good kids club house by day and place where a loud snorer has to go during the night.
Cottage styles: I have viewed the inside of other cottages to get a sense of the variety. Each have their own characteristics, views and space. Some are newer and some are older. You might be inclined to preview the inside of a few before rental if you get the chance (i.e. after guests have checked out).
Note: The housekeeping cottages require you to clean up and take out your own garbage.
Interesting: No televisions any where. No dish washers either (even in the newest cottage)
Activities: I always viewed this as a place for relaxing and enjoying the outdoors with family and friends. The cottages are not rammed together as with other resorts so there is some privacy. The activiites are at your own place and leisurely. They do not have children's programs like some other resorts. You can also go explore such as to Algonquin Park (about 45 minutes to the interpretation centre).
Overall: A nice spot to relax. If you go in the shoulder season, you might save some on the rates, but Port Cunnington can be a little pricy, but its always in demand.

We've been to PCL twice a year for the last 3 years or so and have fallen in love with the place. The food is gourmet- the lodge property is stunningly beautiful- it's not ever over crowded-it's at the waters edge on lake of bays and the proeprty is clean and lot's to do.
Kids love the beach-even big kids like me!
There's tennis-darts-TV-bluray- putting green-shuffleboard- horseshoes- ping pong and a hoard of water stuff like canoes and kayaking.
Boat docks for your boat and a boat house to dock yourself in too.
The value is excellent compared to othe Muskoka resorts and many people come back year after year and keep their week reserved! A wide assortment of accomadations to suit everybody from short term stay cottages to long term stay large family cottages.
Great deals in the spring and fall too.
So if you are thinking of a Muskoka holiday in a beautiful place at a reasonable price-then this is the place for you.
I don't think other people have put a review of PCL on here in case other people actually discover it's virtues!! Visit their website and few the lodgings and grounds and the rates are posted their too!
Enjoy Port Cunnington Lodge! We always do!
