I spent a weekend at this hotel sitting by the pool reading a book. Enjoyed the delicious Italian food in the hotel restaurant that overlooks the typical Italian valley ( think olives, cheese, meats and wine yum).

I also took a walk into town (a good 20 minute walk)- one of those classical cities on a hill that seems to be built on top of itself.

The whole experience was absolutely charming!

I would go back!

Dear Cguu,
we are very happy to know that your experience at the castle has been so relaxing...books, pool, nice food...that's the exact type of vacation we would like to do, too! Thanks for appreciating the main essence of the castle: beauty, tranquillity and peace. We hope you'll keep the memory of your weekend for a long time.

We just returned form 3 weeks in Italy; we relied on trip advisor to find places to stay that would be fun, elegant, in neighborhoods, or with truly helpful staff. This was one of the two most memorable places we stayed (other was in Cinque Terre). Beautifully renovated castle; wonderful grounds. And while the lunch we ate there was just adequate, the dinner was one of the two best of our trip.

not inexpensive but worth the money- if you are in or around Perugia.

also- one of the desk clerks told us about a great walking/running path along a river about 1 five minute drive in the opposite direction of Perugia.

Room Tip: we asked for one with an outside view.

You can't get a more breathtaking view or beautiful grounds and structures than this hotel offers. Staff was great, free breakfast delicious. I agree with many of the glowing comments ... But! It's a bit of a chore to find on GPS driving a car, so take a taxi from Perugia, or let an experienced driver drive the rental car. Our only complaint about the beautiful bed room was the hardness of the pillows on the beds. This issue isn't limited to the Monterone. Italian hotels calculate they can save expense by investing in pillows that will literally never have to be replaced because they are so dense, hard, and inflexible they literally cannot wear out over time. It feels like you're lying on a sack of flour surrounded by a clean white pillowcase. They are actually made of a solid slab of highly compressed foam rubber - - the opposite of the light, fluffy pillows offered by some hotels. The result is a bad night's sleep, and a sore neck in the morning.

Dear traveler469,
thank you very much for writing so good about the staff, the breakfast and the views you enjoyed during your stay at the castle.
We are sorry and a bit concerned about your complaint, just because we do have different types of pillows (among them, also goose-down pillows), but we did not receive any request for a change. We hope this detail will not affect the memory of your experience at the castle.

We enjoyed our stay, what a fabulous setting! Our room had a marvellous view. Our dinners at Il Postale were exemplary - thank you Chef. We thank you.

Weird was the horrible plastic beakers in our room - the lowest possible squashy quality. What the hell? We asked for glasses for water, which were then removed. This plastic rubbish, and apparent insistence on plastic, could not be more at odds with the quality of the hotel. So - constructive criticism - respect your guests! YOU wouldn't want to attempt to drink from picnic ware.

Also, no service at all after 11.30. A bit early we thought and inconsistent day to day.

If the weird plastic cups are some sort of economy measure, please stop washing all the towels every day, entirely unnecessary and unusual in our experience of hotel sustainability, please provide glassware for your guests.

We did have a lovely time, you couldn't help those sleep deprived children whose mother preferred her tablet. We suggest a bit more research into the quality norms, e.g. hair conditioner - always the mark of a good hotel.

Sorry, this sounds negative.

Dear Angela E,
we are very happy that you spent a lovely time at Castello di Monterone. Thank you very much for appreciating the beauty of the building, the views, the room and the restaurant Il Postale.

We see your point about the cups in the room: we put plastic cups simply for security reasons, far from considering this disrespectful of our guests. We are thinking about finding nice glasses to replace the plastic ones, we agree with you that is aesthetically better.

It is not correct to say that there is no bar-service at all after 11:30 PM: our night concierge is available to serve drinks when the staff finish the service at the restaurant.

We always try to give high standard products in the courtesy line: hair&body wash, intimate soap, body lotion, bar soap. You also find shower-cup, teeth-brush and tooth-paste, sewing-kit, cotton for make-up removal, ears cleaning sticks, brushes, sleeping mask, earplugs. There is not a specific product for hair-care because it is usually a very personal choice, but we may think to introduce something like this. Thanks for your suggestion.
We believe that the daily change of sheets and towels is among the quality norms, it is a service that is usually well-considered in hotels of our category. We would like to say that we are available to modify the frequency of washing for those guests who care sustainability. We just need a precise request.

We hope you will keep a nice memory of the castle among the nice places you have visited during your trip to Umbria.

This hotel is a gem.
4 Years of renovating and improvements with no expenses spared, it appears.
Everything is done and maintained with a very high standard. The rooms have been made and decorated with elegance and finesse in a style that matches the small castle from 1416. This also goes for the modern facilities that blends in perfectly. It's hard to tell what is original and what has been added on, but the result is stunning.
The restaurant: "Il Postale" is well worth a visit.

The charming Castello de Monterone lived up to our expectations - gorgeous location, superb views, beautiful rooms with every convenience...but what really made the difference was the helpful and courteous staff who went out of their way to make our visit unforgettable.

During our stay, we parked our rental car in a serviced car park on the perimeter of the historic centre of Perugia. Upon returning to the hotel that evening, we were horrified to notice a thin strip of yellow paint along the side of the car (we had left the keys with the car park staff). As we had a substantial excess to pay on any damage, we were not happy. We mentioned our dilemma to the reception staff who immediately spoke to their maintenance team. We were assured the problem would be fixed before we left in the morning. Sure enough, by 9.30 am the paint marks were removed and all signs of damage had disappeared! It was done without a word. That's what I call going the extra mile!

Room Tip: Wooden floors above make first floor rooms less noisy.

We had a lovely stay at Castello di Monterone. Our wheelchair accessible room, Opretoia, was exactly as pictured on the hotel's website.
The people were very friendly, though we had some communication confusion over email.
We wish we had been there in warmer months to use the pool (the sauna and steam room are not wheelchair accessible).
We had dinner each night at the hotel's restuarant, Il Postale, which was very convenient and comfortable after a day of sightseeing. We found the food at dinner to be just OK. Some dishes were quite nice, like the piglet's neck, while the pasta dishes were bland. Our local La Palazzola rose brut was a bit bitter. We stayed away from the pasta dishes the other nights, having the duck burger one night (yum!) and the steak another (OK). We did LOVE breakfasts! They had delicious artisan cheeses, breads, and meats. The scrambled eggs were good, too. The cappuccinos were a great way to start the day! Their breakfast sweets ranged from sublime (light chocolate cookies) to boring/bad (some cakes/tarts), but that's OK because I try to stick to protein anyway.
Wifi was throughout the hotel was fast, and we appreciated having our on thermostat in our room so we could control the temperature of the room.
A few annoyances:
There isn't enough space between the bed and the wall for me to pass in my wheelchair, so I couldn't open and close the curtains of the window (which is actually french doors out onto our patio), and this was a problem because just beyond our private patio was a public walkway; people can see right in!
They only have plastic cups in the room; I like a glass cup thank you very much (and the plastic ones are so wasteful!).
The roll in shower, which is quite accessible, drains water all over the bathroom floor. We got better at making less of a mess after a shower or two.
The lights in our room were bright and harsh. I felt like I was in a spotlight on stage.
Overall, I would recommend this lovely place. They have great views, our room was quiet, and we felt like we had a bit of an oasis after the bustle of Rome. Staying in a converted castle is pretty awesome, especially one they make wheelchair accessible.

Room Tip: They have pictures of all of their rooms on their website. Opretoia is wheelchair accessible.

Dear abh123456,
thank you very much for your review and thanks for deciding to have a holiday experience at Castello di Monterone.
We appreciate your compliments to the castle, the food, the staff and to other services like wi-fi connection.
Concerning the things you didn't like very much, we can say that the room Opretoia has been thought to be completely accessible for disabled people. We could not change the width of any of our rooms, so we had to work inside the existing space.
You're right about plastic cups, we make it just for security reasons - but probably we are changing our mind...
The bathroom has no step to allow the wheelchair to enter, so water has no barriers too. It probably flows on the floor for the time of the shower, then it flows away, but we think it could not be different from this.
Lights are adjustable, we will check and try to change the position of the lamps to avoid an aggressive light-effect in the room. Thanks for your advice.
We hope you will keep the castle among your nicest memories of your travel to Italy.
