“the secret is out!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 9, 2012

This Castle was the highlight of our return trip to Italy. We felt quite fortunate to stay several nights inside these fortress walls. Discovered the roof top access on our final evening, under a canopy of stars. Our Secret room was the best kept secret. It may not have a view but makes up for it in it's size and the amazing bathroom accommodations.
We so enjoyed our buffet breakfasts outside in the garden each morning. Great cappuccinos!
Thank you for making my dreams come true!

Room Tip: Camera Secreto, "the secret room" has a beautiful, large bathroom.

We had two nights here, we stayed in the suite overlooking Perugia, which you could not fault you could sit in bed and admire the views, the room was spacious and the bathroom well equipped. The reception staff were really hospitable and got us road maps of the region which we didn't have and told us of places to see in such a short time. We had dinner in the restaurant twice we sat on the terrace area overlooking Perugia, and both occasions the food was excellent, the waiting staff were attentive but not overpowering and the food was very reasonably priced for the quality. The restaurant was busy so it is advisable to book. Breakfast was good, a good selection they were a little slow to replenish and possibly they could put the water into chillers but that was my only moan! If I was to fault the hotel, the lunch menu is very basic they could easily improve this by offering pasta with a choice of a few sauces or salads,it wouldn't need to be fancy, we ordered parma ham and toasted mozarella sandwich and it was just that no garnish two slices of white bread and a bit of filling and the pizza which could have easily been home made but it wasn't and overcooked! The hotel is very peaceful with a small swimming pool, loungers and a further garden to relax in. A lovely stay with very nice staff, from reception to housekeeping to waiting.

Room Tip: We had Camera delle Dame

Dear sebax,
thank you so much for the lovely words of your review! It has been a pleasure to be your peaceful place for 2 nights. It's true, the castle is a relaxing place, thanks to its position, just in the middle of the countryside, and it's so nice that you loved this landscape. We also appreciate that you had nice human relations with all the staff: we like to be at your disposal if you need any help.
We await for you again, for another relaxing stay in Umbria.

Having arrived late due to difficulty in finding the hotel, we were greeted with calm and genuine hospitality by the receptionist, who continued to be lovely and helpful during our stay. Our room was beautiful and very clean, and there was no need to use air conditioning. The evening meal menu was superb and reasonably priced, but the constant playing of jazz music late in the evening at the end of a tiring day actually spoilt what should have been a great experience given the quality of the food and service. If I were to make a negative comment regarding the room, it was that the kitchen back door was just outside our door, and said kitchen door was open, letting out noise. Also, in the morning the chambermaids cupboard was by our door and she laid out her cleaning equipment and replenishments on our small patio before we left, which was not really expected in a hotel of this calibre. Minor points that could be avoided with a little thought. Breakfast was great on the terrace, although far too many tables were out of the sun leaving, and the absolute beauty of the views and the peace and quiet were shattered by the constant background noise of the same jazz we had to endure the night before. Sadly for me, I would not return on the basis of the music, but the hotel is fabulous.

Room Tip: Avoid the back of the kitchen.

Dear Julescumbria1956,
thank you for having shared your experience on Tripadvisor, your feedback is a very important tool to improve our services. We are happy that you found a great atmposphere among the staff of the castle and that you appreciated the beauty and the cleanliness of the room. The chambermaids make everyday a huge work in order to keep the castle at its best and they always do their activities with care and respect of the spaces and the guests. We hope that the noise that sometimes may happen will not affect the good remember of the beauty of the castle. The music at the restaurant is useful in order to create some good atmosphere inside the dining room, maybe there had been some problems with the volume and we are sorry if any inattention concerning this matter has spoilt your meal. In any case, we are really happy that you have appreciated the food, at dinner, just like at breakfast.
We hope that you will decide to come back and visit us us again in the future.

Much loved by (especially but not exclusively) foreigners, this is most people's idea of what a Tuscan hotel should be - even though it's located just outside Perugia in Umbria. This is a mostly reconstructed and stylishly modernized Knights Templar castle (parts of which date back to the middle ages) with a view over Perugia and the surrounding countryside that could be a living renaissance landscape painting. The owner, who is very visible, and his well schooled personnel are welcoming and friendly. The highly individual bedrooms are fine albeit, in our case, compact: the bathroom was indeed so small that all functions could almost have been performed in it without actually moving! And, in keeping with the style and mood of the hotel, wood, iron and natural stone (including the floors) predominate in the bedroom - not the most comfortable combination. The recently constructed spa area ticks the box but is relatively small - the excellent sauna and hamam are complemented by a small outdoor pool (unheated!) and all three are a short outside walk away from the bedrooms. The hotel's undoubted stars, however, are its two restaurants - il Gradale and the more formal, Michelin-starred il Postale - both of which are managed by the same chef and offer outstanding cuisine, with il Postale really pushing out the boundaries of creative cooking. All in all, a great experience - but one that doesn't come cheaply.

Receptionists very helpful. Rooms good but air conditioning noisey and not too effective. Excellent views and location for Perugia good but hard to find with sat nav. Food slightly disappointing - breakfast lacking and choice limited. Meal in Michelin Restaurant poor as Sunday and limited to one course set meals. Probably would have been better on another proper day.

Dear Evergreenshoots,
thanks for leaving your experience into the community of Tripadvisor. Thanks also for your appreciation about the location and the staff: it is really nice to hear that you have found at the castle nice location and nice people. It's a pity that the food has not hit your attention. During the summer, every Sunday evening the chef creates two different menu proposals in order to give our guests an alternative to the menu à la carte.
We will be so happy if you decide to come back again and re-discover the castle.

We stayed at the Castello for a week as we took day trips through Umbria and it was the highlight of our two-week trip to Italy, as well as one of the nicer and most unique lodging experences we've had in decades of traveling. The castle is well maintained -- the grounds are beautiful -- and the staff is extremely supportive and helpful. There have been comments on Trip Advisor about the small size of the rooms, but we stayed in the Del Gastaldo room and found it roomy enough and well appointed, with a very nice bathroom and shampoos, etc. The rooms are of different sizes, so I would advise conferring with the managment or taking time to choose a room from pictures online. The morning breakfasts had plenty of choice and the food was quite good; we stayed during good weather and the morning meal outside overlooking Perugia was a real plus each day. We ate twice in the Il Gradale restaurant and the food was good, but we were not overwhelmed; we did not try the high-end Il Postale restaurant. Our only complaint during the week was that the hotel hosted an evening wedding at Il Gradale beneath our room, and the loud music and dancing went on until 1 a.m., preventing us from sleeping. The staff was very apologetic, and presented us with a gift of a drawing of the castle, but it seems ill advised to agree to host loud parties outside when you are also hosting guests. All said, though, it was a minor irritation, and the whole experience was quite wonderful. We would love to come back and I would absolutely recommend it.

Room Tip: Ask the management.

Dear JWF Arlington,
thanks a lot for choosing Castello di Monterone for and entire week. We really appreciate when our guests decide to live their experience in Umbria starting from the castle. Beyond its good position for visiting the main towns of the region, we believe the castle is a nice place to begin a relaxing holiday day and also a nice place in which having some rest in the evening.
All the people coming to us show a sort of attraction for this place, we cannot describe how many feelings they convey: they feel excited, curious, happy, surprised...some of them wants the castle to be the place where celebrating the most important day of their life. All this people are a wonderful gift for us, they are part of our job but they also have our human gratification, so we cannot but do our best in order to give everybody the attention they deserve.
We are incredibly happy that you keep a nice remember of the castle, thanks for your beautiful contribute that touches our hearts. We hope to see you again during your next trip to Italy.

Ok, so this place is not cheap. But for the venue you are staying in, it is fantastic value. The scenery is just so incredible that the views you are greeted with in the morning would almost make you emotional! Seriously its like living in a postcard for a few days. We stayed in some really excellent venues during our two weeks in Italy, but this was definitely my favourite. Great for day trips to Perugia too which is a lovely city
