“Nice hotel, average staff”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 16, 2010

We recently stayed at this hotel for 2 nights. The hotel itself was quite nice for a 3-star hotel, nice rooms, excellent roof-top pool and garden, and an amazing chocolate store near reception. We got a bar of chocolate on our arrival, which was a nice surprise! The staff were pretty average, they really didn't seem like they were interested in you and not nearly as friendly and helpful as the staff in other hotels we stayed in. The hotel itself was a little outside the city center of Perugia, maybe a 30 minute walk, but we knew this upon booking the hotel. The restaurant was quite expensive and they brought you things that you didn't order (like salad), and then charged you for it at the end of the meal!

Two smart ways to make a very basic travelers' hotel more appealing, and both satisfying rather than disappointing:
1) decor, names, furniture, room labels all refer to chocolate and indirectly to Etruscans. Would be moot or foolish, manages to make very good sense as the hotel has a very nice and well stocked shop for chocolate-based items and presents
2) special offers for early birds, or special combinations (people on their birthday, people with a given difference in how tall they are...) allow you to stay there for very, very low prices.

Both help you happily forget that rooms, even after smart refurbishment, are very basic. Looks like it was a dorm or guest house for the nearby university.

This hotel is disappointing. It is not close enough to the train/bus station for a comfortable walk and it is nowhere near to the centre of town which is a AUD$20+ taxi ride away.

Apart from the free bar of chocolate on arrival (between two people), the internet doesn't reach the rooms, the hotel is gloomy and dull with ugly decor, the views are ugly, it's an ugly location and breakfast (although nice) is not included in the room price. Service is indifferent.

Very poor value for money. I cannot find one point on which to compliment this hotel.

The Chocohotel was very friendly, and had all the conveniences and mod cons of a business hotel. Also very convenient to the station, if that's what you're after. Is a bit of an up-hill hike into the old town, and while not too far (maybe 15 mins), for my purposes I would have prefered to be right in the centre, and probably in something a bit smaller. It's on a busy road, but the rooms are very quiet, although you can hear through the walls to your neighbours. The restaurant was fairly characterless, but had really nice food. The roof terrace and pool also didn't appear to be open when I was there. Can't fault the hotel itself, for a large business-oriented hotel it was fine, only the location wasn't ideal.

I really appreciated this hotel!!!
The building isn't so charming from the outside, but inside you have a choco-experience that you'll not forget.
The staff is very friendly and helpful regarding informations about bus, the city and so on, and you'll have a choco tablet on your arrival according to the level in which you're staying (milk, nuts, black).
The atmosphere is friendly and relaxing, the rooms are spacious and also the bathrooms.
For the Umbria Jazz there was a free shuttle bus that took us just in front of the Arena Santa Giuliana, also coming back until 2.50.
The thing i liked least was the location, quite far from the city center so we had to take 1 bus to the station and then the mini metro to the city center.

The hotel looks like it belongs to a large chain and so the decor and rooms are fairly bland. However you feel when staying here that they have tried to make an effort to give it a bit of style - from the bar of chocolate at check-in to the choice of having chocolate at breakfast. There is also free internet access in the lobby.
It is near the station and quite a walk uphill before you hit the scala mobile to the centre of Perugia. The up side of this is it is fairly easy to find and to get to, if you are driving. It also has parking directly outside the front of the hotel. The parking is not secure but it is opposite reception and on a fairly busy road.
There is a sunny rooftop pool but it is overlooked by some flats.
The hotel staff were lovely, very efficient and helpful. On reception they had the times of the flights to and from Perugia airport and they will arrange to book an airport minibus in time for your flight if you wish.
The hotel is functional, clean and bland it has no exciting views or decor, however the staff are charming and helpful and lift the mood of the whole hotel.

  • Liked — the quirkness in a bland surrounding
