Having loved it so much the first time this was our return visit to Casa San Gabriel and the wonderful David, Chrissie, Eli, and Lucia, and we were (again) so sad to have to leave at the end of our stay! The cottages are beautifully furnished and fully equiped to whip up some delicious feasts with fresh local ingredients, including oil produced from the olives in the neighbouring olive grove. Views of the valley are stunning, and there are several well-marked walking trails that take you past abandoned castles and classic Italian villas. It's also the perfect base to explore the many nearby towns and cities - a particular highlight for us being the walled mountain town of Montone. Afterward walking and exploring all day, we'd typically relax with a cold Moretti or Aperol spritz on the deck while watching the sun set behind the hills. Hoping to return again soon!
Returning to Casa San Gabriel for our third visit felt like returning to a familiar second home. As always, we were warmly welcomed by Chrissie, David and family. Our stay was again in La Stalla, one of three cottages on the estate. The views across the valley are sensational, the facilities are attractive and fulfilled our every need. It is the perfect base for exploring exciting and historic places of interest including Assisi, Gubbio, Perugia, Orvieto, even Siena and Florence. After a busy day exploring we were able to enjoy the luxury of the elevated swimming pool and its expansive picturesque views across to Assisi. A wonderful haven of relaxation set in the Umbrian countryside. Thanks again David, Chrissie, Eli, Lucia, and a special 'woof' to Cuba and Bessie.
We came to Italy for a 2+ wk "Roman Holiday" to celebrate ours &a our dear friends 25th anniversaries. After touring Rome & The Amalfi Coast Casa San Gabriel was the crown jewel of a fairytale vacation.
How wonderful to stay in such a beautiful environment with the kindest hosts. Sharing a meal with other visitors and the owners making our own pizza and baking it in a 500 yr old oven to Drinking the glorious wine from their vineyards. Sitting around a table and sharing our time with new friends is a treasured memory.
Casa San Gabriel is in a most beautiful area that was quiet, gorgeous, clean and you can be as social as you like or retreat to your own cottage for solitude. They have thought of everything from a map of walking trails around the property to a very helpful info packet that has a list of every place you could want to visit complete with directions.
We came home rested and haven't quit glowing from the experience. We definitely have made new friends and look forward to returning (as often as possible)!!
This was our second visit this year, and a stronger endorsement of the property, its location and the hosts is clearly not possible. The cottages have been beautifully and thoughtfully converted. They are situated in an area of outstanding natural beauty with awe inspiring views across the valley towards Assisi in the distance. The location is ideal for simply relaxing by the pool, hiking along the local trails through the hills and vineyards, or using as a base for day trips to the many beautiful towns, museums, art galleries and wineries of Umbria and Tuscany. The hosts are friendly, attentive, and seek to make visitors feel truly welcome without being in the least intrusive. The weekly pizza evening is a delight for those who chose to attend. We will return I am sure.
This is the perfect location to relax or to explore the area. Our hosts were welcoming and informative about the area. We had days out and days relaxing on the terrace and by the pool. The cottage was well fitted out and very comfortable. Had an amazing time there including the great pizza evening with the other guests. We will visit again!
We are an Australian retiree couple who very recently had a fantastic fortnight in Umbria based at Casa San Gabriel. Our hosts, Chrissie and David, were exceptional in their welcome, attentiveness, and recommendations about the local region .... and things to see and do are abundant. Our cottage was well and thoughtfully provisioned with immediate needs, which we didn't expect but much appreciated - cereal, croissant, jam, butter, tea, coffee, biscuits, water, balsamic.... their own olive oil and a lovely bottle of vino rosso.... also their special produce. There is a huge wood-fired oven on the property (used to serve the needs of the whole village originally) and we joined our hosts and other guests for a memorable pizza night on the upper terrace. This is a foodie paradise for eating out, or even eating in...our cottage even had its own terrace, pergola and barbecue. There are at least a dozen noteworthy medieval villages within an hour's drive, every one exquisite. We would highly recommend Casa San Gabriel for anyone looking to explore Umbria/Tuscany. We will certainly recommend it to all our friends, and look forward to our second visit.
Loved truffle hunting and wine tasting in the vineyard below the property, the lovingly restored rustic accommodation and hosts who worked so hard to make our stay memorable.
