One of the pleasures of using the main escalator in Perugia is that you pass through the Rocca Paloina, the fortress built by the Pope about five centuries ago. The spaces are impressive and on a very hot day like today, it is a very pleasant place to be. A few years back, one of the larger rooms in the complex was used for some of the best concerts of the Umbria Jazz festival. I say best, not biggest, since the room, while high, has a intimate scale, as ideal for a jazz performance as the big stadium is not. I'm curious as to why it's no longer used.

We just happened on this place but want go to back, atmosphere is fantastic in there. Would love to go to a concert in there. More art galleries would be good too.

The underground city was interesting and COOL on a hot day! Note that other reviewers have mentioned that this is right on the stair/escalator route from the main piazza (across from the Bufani Hotel) to the parking at the bottom of the hill. It is, but watch out - not all the escalators are working all the time. The day we were there, the up escalators were functional, but men were working on all the down escalators (which were shut down), so we had to walk down many flights of stairs to get back down. As you explore Rocca Paolina, you might also check out the Museum Centre, located near the top entrance, an art museum with free admission!

First time we visited and it was very interesting. It is amazing that somebody actually bulild the underground city, and it is worth going to if you are in the area. Parking is a bit difficult in perugia, so we parked out side the city walls.

Escalators from the car park bring visitors through here, but it is more than meets the eye. Read a bit about what it is. In a power play, Pope Paul III demolished a quarter of the town that was owned by the powerful Baglioni family in order to "curb the audacity of the Perugians." He built the Rocca Paolina fortress on top of that area, leaving what remains below that you see from the escalators only to help level and fortify the fortress above. A short walk around shows you old street signs and passageways from the Baglioni era.
