If you're traveling with kids/teens and want to change things a bit from the usual museum/old town sightseeing, then a visit to the lake may be in order. It's about 1/3 of the way between Assisi and Siena. The ferry from San Feliciano to Polvese Island took about 1/2 hour. There's some old fort/church/water garden to explore on foot by yourself or take the guided tour that leaves every hour. The guided tour gives better access to the upper structure of the fort. On the eastern side of the island, there is a beach and shade umbrellas if you want to go for a swim. We saw some kayak rentals next to the beach but no attendants nearby so we didn't try.
For a nice meal nearby, try Restaurant Pigra Tinca in San Feliciano (about 100 m north of the ferry ticket booth). We only had the appetizers while waiting for our ferry and they were all tasty
