If you're traveling with kids/teens and want to change things a bit from the usual museum/old town sightseeing, then a visit to the lake may be in order. It's about 1/3 of the way between Assisi and Siena. The ferry from San Feliciano to Polvese Island took about 1/2 hour. There's some old fort/church/water garden to explore on foot by yourself or take the guided tour that leaves every hour. The guided tour gives better access to the upper structure of the fort. On the eastern side of the island, there is a beach and shade umbrellas if you want to go for a swim. We saw some kayak rentals next to the beach but no attendants nearby so we didn't try.

For a nice meal nearby, try Restaurant Pigra Tinca in San Feliciano (about 100 m north of the ferry ticket booth). We only had the appetizers while waiting for our ferry and they were all tasty

Go to Pasignano, take the vaporetto to Isla Magiore and have lunch on one of the lakeside restaurants. Try the local fish.

10 Minutes by boat from tuoro sul trasimeno --island had a music festival last weekend in june-blissfull failing over and our boatman stopped just off the quay to let us watch and listen to a classical pianist performing at the end of the quay.island has many restaurants to eat lovely for a stroll round and visit the church on the top of the island.
Well worth the effort to go over and have either lunch or dinner boats sail over and back hourly.

We have visited this island twice, last year it was a baking hot day and we walked to the top of the island, visiting the little chapel with its painted ceilings on the way up. Returning the the Main Street to have lunch at All'Antigo orogologia in the garden under the olive trees - it was idealic.
This year we returned but on a stormy day - still tranquil and seemingly deserted. Fantastic moody views of the mainland covered in dark stormy clouds. We sought refuge at All'Antigo orologigia again to have Gnocchi under cover until the rain stopped, then wandered along the small harbour edge to watch the lizards coming out to bask in the sun.
The island always seems deserted despite people arriving regularly on the ferry, a beautiful quiet place to spend a few hours.

This lake in the middle of Italy, in the Provence of Perugia is really breathtaking. I couldn't believe my eyes. It's off one of the main highways, so you need to turn off and follow the lake around until you get to the Marina, then keep driving (if you're coming from Assisi direction) until you reach a tin village centre with all of the offerings....I was really impressed. What a gem.
(Tried to load a few beautiful photos, but must be a glitch with TripAdvisor, I couldn't even load one)
